HI,
I am somewhat new to this site and have been using a scanner for several years now. In the past year when Putnam County (where I live here) did the "changeover" my scanner has become quiet. I realize that they may have started trunking but I cannot find any clues of the frequencies that they are using now so that I may have an idea of of kind of scanner I need in order to listen in. Any incite is appreciated.

I see here on this site that they say that Baldwin and Putnam County are switched over to the "OARS" system. Im not sure what that is. Does anyone have any clue? Also, how do i get to listen to that?

Thanks!

That is a P25 Phase 1 Trunk System. OARS just means Oconee Area Radio System. Any scanner that picks up P25 Phase 1 will work. I recommend and use Uniden scanners.

No, your scanner will not receive P25. You need a Uniden BCD325P2 or BCD436HP if you want a handheld that will support your area. I use the Uniden BCD436HP (Handheld) and BCD536HP (Home/Mobile) scanners.

You do not have to have a Uniden to receive P25. There are many scanners you can use to receive P25. My preference is the Uniden BCD996XT, which Uniden doesn't make anymore. Both Uniden and Whistler have recently came out with new models if you want the latest and greatest. Of course those new radios come with a hefty price tag. If you don't mind buying used you can find great scanners at good prices and save some money. Below is a list I took out of the Wiki here at RR so you know what scanners can receive P25 phase I. Some of them have been around a while and you can only get used. I haven't bought nor used any of the new models yet, too expensive for me, so I can't help you there but like I said I love the BCD996XT (I have 4 of them 3 of which I bought used and saved a ton of $$). Good luck.

Putnam is still on VHF analog. I'm hearing PCSO on 155.4225 at this moment. They do use MOTOTRBO on 155.580 but not as the primary dispatch channel, more like talk-around/tac. There was talk of Putnam and Morgan counties joining OARS several years ago but they never did more than signing the intergovernmental agreements. Morgan County went VHF MOTOTRBO instead.
