Hey guys,

I've got a user who brought me their BCD436HP and after some questioning admitted they dropped it. You actually can't tell from looking at it. Externally it seems to have taken the drop well.

However it is no longer making any noise. It is scanning just fine, the LED is lighting up when it pauses on channels and by all accounts seems to be functioning. It is just not making any sound. No key beeps or scanner audio.

I opened it up and don't see any problems. No cracked solder or other obvious problems. Anybody every seen this before or have any thoughts?

I guess the next step will be to swap in a speaker from another unit and see if it works. If that turns out to be the fix then $10 isn't too bad.

I just wanted to see if y'all had any thoughts before I start cracking open another scanner.

Thanks

EDIT: The headphone jack still works, so the audio circuitry seems to be functioning just fine.

I would say it's likely the internal speaker since you have good external audio.

Actually, the guy got pretty lucky if that's all it is.

Check that the headphone jack cutoff is not shorting signal to the speaker. A speaker is a weird thing to stop working after a drop (considering all the electronics) and some Uniden headphone Jacks have been known to do this.

So Far Away....
Open the unit up,
the front panel houses the speaker.
the speaker is held by a dual cross spring.
it clips into place. a drop could have caused
the speaker to come out of alignment with
contacts.
there are no wires connecting the speaker to
the main board, there are 2 contacts that match
up with pads on the PCB..

So..a drop Could, have caused the spring to give
and the speaker to jar/jump..causing the contacts
to come out of alignment..

A possibility..6 screws will tell you..Good lick..

a quick fix

go to a garage sale
pick up an old set of computer speakers for a buck.
fixed.
also the plug has to be stereo. most computer speakers are.
my pro2004 audio gave out and i picked up a $1 fix myself years ago.

The OP posts a problem with a HANDHELD scanner, and you tell him to carry around a set of computer speakers speakers as a fix. Ummm......ok. I don't think your advice is very good.
