Cheap General Coverage Reciever

I am looking for one of/the cheapest HF/VHF receivers money can buy. I want to use it to monitor satellites and shortwave broadcasts. Any ideas? Preferably tabletop but any recommendations are welcomed. 73 KE8CPW

Probably the very cheapest way to go is one of the RTL-SDR dongles and the free software SDR#. The newest dongles from rtlsdr.com will do HF receive without an up-converter, so your only cost is the dongle and whatever you want to spend on a decent HF antenna, which can be as simple as a long wire.
