I have an Asus rt-n66u and flashed it with asuswrt. OpenVPN is built in and very easy to setup.

I would recommend something that has OpenVPN built in. This is very secure and easy to set up.
PROSCAN works best and is cheaper than new hardware
On my phone I use team viewer 10 (free) on my laptop and I use my 2nd included license total cost $50.00
You only need VPN if you want to listen outside of your home network. Even if you use proscan, you will need VPN or a dedicated computer on you home network to listen from outside your home network.
Monitor , Control , Program. VPN = NETWORKING SKILLS. Simple port forwarding is very simple. I have a pc running with 8 scanners running at the same time on PROSCAN

If you setup PROSCAN with audio then when you connect with TEAMVIEWER you get the audio also I hear all 8 scanners when on TEAMVIEWER each scanner is setup for different areas
