Milair Open Carrier

There's several milair frequencies in our area here in Jersey that always seem to have strong persistent open carriers. Even at full squelch. Particularly 243.000, 250.000, 270.000, 290.250, and 297.000. Is this normal? It almost sounds like an open phone patch.

Disclaimer: As long as I've been a ham and scanner enthusiast, and I'm just now getting into milair with limited knowledge of milair comms.

Those "carriers" are being produced by your scanner. They are called "birdies".

its a shame too cause i have to lock out 243.0 on everything, amongst others, cause if the scanner doesn't cause the RFI right off the bat, nearly anything else that uses electricity seems too. same goes for 121.5 and 40.5 to lesser extents. for me at least.

If you have a Uniden scanner, there is a feature/setting called "IFX", which alters the IF frequency in the scanner, which eliminates/moves the birdie frequencies.
