What remote viewing / control (watch / control screen over USB from a laptop) exist?

You might try Scanner Screen. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_Jndzk4GdzJRW9tU0d4VGZMVlk/edit It's for the BCD436/536HP scanners, but might work for the 436PT as well, but I don't know for sure. It will let you view what's going on with the scanner, but doesn't offer control.

Try Scanner Monitor, instead: Scanner Monitor.
It offers full control, with the sole exception it isn't able to enable/disable recording.

I've used Scanner Monitor, and it did a good job. The reason I didn't recommend it was due to this info, posted on Scanner Monitor's website.

The Scanner Monitor application uses a Chrome App to connect to BCDx36HP scanners. This service will not be available for new installs later in 2017 - and will no longer run in early 2018. The following is part of Google's notice for dropping this capability:
