Fox 43, WPMT (York) reports the paging/alert systems in York/Dauphin CO's
is down due to GPS failure.
Perhaps one of you tech guys can explain what GPS has to do with alert
system paging ?

GPS is used to keep the paging system in sync.. Both systems use multiple transmitters that are simulcasting (transmitting at the same time) so GPS timing is used.

Dave, wouldn't the GPS receivers at the transmitter sites be able to revert to one of the other 31 satellites in the GPS system if it loses contact with one?

Also, for what it's worth, it turns out that it INS'T actually a GPS failure. It's a firmware issue with the GPS clock system used by the paging transmitters.

It looks like the techs went to a *few* sites around the county and got it back online. The county says the few sites are providing ok coverage for most of the county except for the extreme upper county.

The GPS is COMMON per site... Meaning there is ONE GPS receiver at each site as a master clock for both the Trunked system and Paging.
Yes, OCGUARD, the receiver tracks 12 satellites as a rule.. One or two out is not going to degrade the timing..
Typical IN EXPERIENCE at YCDES tech...

The 26 million dollar questions....
Why did York publish a GUESS as to why the system was down???
Why did it take a full day to figure it was a firmware issue that caused the outage???
Why did the tech team not figure the issue out sooner?.. No Experienced personnel??
There are TWO controllers on the paging system, one at YCDES and one at the LTBF.. BOTH controllers were out at once??

IF in fact the GPS on the paging controllers (plural) went bad, why didn't the "Tech" jumper the time base output from the trunked GPS to the paging?, They are both 10 MHz.??

SORRY BUT SOMETHING ISN'T ADDING UP HERE...

HELLOO YORK COUNTY COMMISSIONERS... WHERE IS OUR TAX MONEY GOING??
