• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Here is the million dollar question.
Are the programming cables the same. XPR and XTL.
Anybody have any issues with the USB cable?

The real answer to both questions is it is entirely dependent on how the XTL you are referencing is configured and whether or not your version of the GUCI cable is serial or USB.

If you've got an XTL with a W series head and is a mid-power unit, the answer to both questions is no. If you've got a high power XTL with a W series head, then the programming cables are the same but the microphones are not. If you have O/M series heads on your XTLs, then yes to both.

This is all true if you have the USB version of the cable.

Referring to the front facing microphone port of the XPR being the same front facing port as the XTL.
I see the ports look almost identical, but I figured there was something big M did that made the 2 ports non compatible with each other as far as programming cables and microphones.
I've always used serial port programming cables, but could not find one for the 5550 version of the XPR.

And in my case, my XTL's are all front mount O series heads. What does give me troubles is the rear mount serial cable.

I'd rather not have to unmount my radio to program it either. I'll stick to the front mount

My VHF XTL is a high power with a W9 (upgrading to a O5 in the next few months). My UHF and 7/800 MHz XTL's are O5 dash mounts. I've never seen the rear serial cable, all of the service cables I have for the rear connector are USB. Do have both serial and USB GUCI cables though.

Wiscomm had the front facing port programming cable with the serial connection. APX, XTL and MOTOTRBO models listed. But the 5550 was not listed for the XPR so I didn't know if it was something to do with that model XPR.
I've never had a usb programming cable. Always been deemed to the serial ports. Some have good luck with them, others have the worst luck, I heard that some here. But I may just jump in the usb cable.
Any particular OS of Windows it doesn't like or seems to work best with? I've still got the old XP laptop reading and writing like crazy. Haha.
