If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I've had my G5 since April and I've not experienced any memory type effect on my battery. There are some days it's still showed 3 bars on the battery, and some where it was one bar when I plugged it up at night & no ill effects. Mine gets charged every night regardless of the battery level. You should be good to go

The G4/G5 Batteries are Li-Polymer Batteries and they love to be charged.
On these types of batteries there is nothing like memory, that was the old Ni-cad batteries.

On the other hand these batteries should not be drained completely as that is very hard on this type.
The newest G5 firmware has complete battery drain protection built in to prevent this.

An observation today on battery changing of my G5 via the USB cable....

The radio is sitting on my desk connected (overnight). Yesterday, when I walked into the room first thing in the morning, the charging status light was green (as I would expect).

Today, still plugged in just like yesterday, the charging light is red and the icon is showing charging.

This seems odd but maybe another protection thing to stop and restart charging to avoid over charging?

FWIW - I've noticed other differences in the USB connection with regard to the PPS being started/open (this may or may not be something that has changed in the latest firmware/PPS). Sometimes, if the radio has been connected to the PC for an extended period, the PPS won't detect the radio until I remove and reinsert the USB plug on the radio.

Are any of these things new as part of the latest firmware or is it just something I'm only starting to notice now?

I believe that the battery in the G-series is a Li-ion battery and not a LiPo battery. There is a difference. However, you are right in saying that you shouldn't fully discharge them, and there isn't a concern about memory. It's really best to charge more often and avoid deep discharge. I put mine on the charger every night before I go to bed.

For some really good information on Li-ion batteries and how to charge/care for them, check this out:

The original G4 and G5 Batteries were LiPo, but Unication recently switched to Li-ion.

That is good reading.

It is good reading, but a ton of it is over my head. :) It does give great advice on how to care for these batteries and, just as your post did, dispels the belief that charging often is good and fully discharging is bad.

...and yet another observation today .... radio still sitting on my desk and this morning, rather than seeing a GREEN (fully charged) or RED (charging?) LED on the top of the G5, the LED is dark (out).

I pressed the "return"/"back" button as I normally do to try and light the display expecting nothing to happen (I'm assuming it drained the battery and is "dead" based on the LED) -- nope - seems to be a full charge and not indicting in charging mode....

I remove the USB cable from the side of the radio - the LED blinks RED and then goes out and the display says "Stop Charging" in yellow at the top.

I then immediately reinsert the cable and the LED lights RED and the display says "Charging" with an animated charging icon (as I expect).

Something doesn't seem right - or at least seems to keep changing from one day to the next....
