• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a KPT-20 Programer, I dont have the cable for programing a tk-820. does anybody have the cable wiring diagrams so i can build one myself as they are not being made anymore. Or a picture of the cable. Not sure if it plugs into the mic jack or some connection inside the unit

thanks

IIRC, the programming cable connects to a connector inside the radio.
I guess so. Some say you program Eprom but I didn't find it there. The only Eprom I found was for the PL code that was on another board on there

The programming port for that repeater is on the top near the front board. If I remember correctly since it has been around 10 year since setting up a TKR-820. The programmer I have/had was a small black enclosure that had the program cable attached but also had a place to insert the eprom for programming.
After researching I have/had the KPT-50.

well, I'm talking about the Mobile unit TK-820. I"m able to program the Eprom for the Pl tone. but cant adding any freqs. I don't really want to send it to a radio shop. i got several of them., in fact i'm planning on getting some tk-880 to replace them. but i'm just thinking on just using the tk-820 as base stations and have them at my families homes

One warning, they aren't narrow band compliant so they can only legally be used on ham frequencies. (Possibly GMRS if they're type accepted)

Sorry about the necropost.

I wonder about the similarities between the TK-810 and the TK-820, both of which need to be programmed by the KPT-20. Anyway I wonder if the TK820 looks like the TK810 programming port pictured below, which I probed to this as far as I can tell:

pin 1: DO - readback TO programmer
pin 2: DI - data TO radio
pin 3: CLK
pin 4: CS
pin 5: NC
pin 6: Power (? - through an LDO on board as far as I can tell)
pin 7: VSS
pin 8: NC

This connector is underneath the top cover of my TK-810. Please verify to make sure pin 7 is actually GND as well as pin 5 and 8 are truly not connected before trusting this pinout, if indeed it is the same connector. Now the other end of the KPT-20 I don't know but I would expect the cable to be run in parallel with the 8 pin connector as these pins on the connector are connected to the eeprom.

The reason why I'm posting this is that I'm sort of looking for someone with a KPT20 to program and read back a config eeprom so that I could try to reverse engineer it - to be able to program my TK-810 at will without the KPT-20.

Apologies again for both the necro and the request...

Thanks!

Kenwood did make a ZKIT to make them narrow band compliant. It consisted of a higher stability TCXO, a different crystal filter for the receiver and some other miscellaneous parts.
