To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello all,

Been a Motorola user for years. I've had one or two Kenwood commercial radios in previous years but I just did an overhaul to Kenwood recently. I purchased and am using older, surplus equipment. One of the radios I've been playing around with is the TK-270 (not the "G" version). I happened to notice that once in a rare while when I am transmitting, 3 beeps will go out over the air with my message - and it is both audible through the speaker and over the air clearly. It seems to happen at random times. I know it isn't a TOT alert, because I have that set for 3 minutes (this one is being used as a ham radio at present). So, the only other thing I could think of is a low battery alert? But the red LED doesn't flash like the manual says it would do. Furthermore, the manual states it would beep only when the voltage is low enough to inhibit transmission. I have attached a sound clip. Can anyone help me out? Is it perhaps a VCO unlock? I know the radio is rated from 150-174 but I didn't think a few MHz below would hurt it.

Thanks for any input!

- Nick

Hard to tell from that recording, but it's probably the TOT pre-alert tone. Check your programming.
TOT Pre-alert is the only one I know of that would do it while transmitting.

VCO unlock will de-key the transmitter.

mmckenna, thanks for the reply! Yes, you were correct, it did have to do with the time-out timer pre-alert. I had it set for 10 seconds (thinking, the pre-alert would sound 10s before the TOT limit was set), however, with this radio, you set the complete timer limit before the pre-alert goes off.
