So..I just picked up a TRX-1. $455.92.

I want to give it a chance. But is Whistler serious with the max audio level? It's way too low!!!

Yes, it is my fault for not reading the spec sheet a little closer.

"8 Ohms Resistor Load at speaker terminal, (BTL): 500 mWatts"

That's ridiculously low!! Not to mention the terrible programming software. I had to download an additional piece of software from Whistler to update the CPU firmware on the scanner because EZ Scan kept cutting out at 50%, 70%, even 99%. I almost lost my patience..
After I updated the CPU firmware, I took the microSD card out of the scanner, and inserted it directly into my laptop. That solved THAT problem..

Sending it back! A shame, I wanted to try NXDN and DMR with it. But the low audio level is too big to surmount. Disappointed.

In that case the low volume level is an artificial limit imposed by the firmware to avoid distortion??, because the BCD436HP is at least 40% louder to my ear!

AudioBoost option

There is an AudioBoost option that is programmable per channel via software or scanner that will give you more audio. I hate to see you give up so quick on the TRX-1 . It really does a super job on NXDN and DMR.

Earbuds or external speakers are your best bet

That's interesting. I have both a BCD436HP and a TRX-1. In my case the TRX-1 is capable of producing the much louder audio. Along those lines, the 436 isn't as loud and it also splatters badly at the default setting of 8.

Apparently both companies have quality control issues. Over the past couple of years, I've seen plenty of posts regarding the poor quality of the internal speakers on both Uniden and Whistler forums.

Sounds just fine to me, the only time I have a hard time hearing it outside by the road from the sound of wooshing air from cars moving. I just got a MaximalPower listen only surveillance headset from Amazon and it works great cutting through the noise.

Specially useful for listening discreetly to the staff at the mall or casino/hotels without them knowing :3

trx1 low volume

assuming you have no hearing issues., my trx1 is very normal re audio levels to five other radios in my mobile.
Have you increased the audio volume to "max" ??
