I'm close enough to monitor Nassau County Fire since I moved to Queens but I usually have my scanner scanning and it picks up nothing during "all hands" or "second+ alarms"

Looking at the database there's so many frequencies spanning from low band, to VHF to UHF. Is there a specific frequency to monitor when there's a big fire? What about Fireground? Is it low power simplex or is it on a repeater?

There’s about 70 or so separate fire departments in Nassau County. Depending on who you’re listening to determines what frequency you’ll need to monitor. And most depts use a low power simplex fireground on scene, so yes - you’ll need to be very close to monitor that. The most you might hear from queens is the activation and response, trucks talking to dispatch etc. Once on scene, you’d have to be close.

You should be able to hear the main dispatch/tones channels as most of them run decent power and are still active
46.10 is the main dispatch and tone frequency - several depts over multiple battalions still use this freq or at least simulcast their dispatch
453.875 simulcasts most but not all tone outs from 46.10
"Battalion" frequencies such as 46.12 46.20 and 46.32 is what some departments still use to talk to dispatch after the initial tone out - you may be able to hear the dispatch side of these freqs but they are simplex and may not be able to hear the mobile side
You could also try some of the crossband battalion repeaters such as 453.275 453.4875 and 460.3875 which you may be able to pick up depending on location
It also depends on the department as some departments use better power then others
One that comes to mind is North Bellmore on 453.850 they use decent power so you may be able to pick that up in queens...

You should also be able to hear Syosset on 470.1375 they have a fairly powerful transnitter off Fairchild Avenue in Plainview that I was able to pick up close to JFK.

Just to somewhat echo the above post - any transmitter which is on that Plainview "fairchild" tower or atop the Nassau Medical Center such as East Meadow 460.4375 those are very tall structures with strong power one should be able to receive in Queens and most of the island for that matter even with a handheld

The new county wide fireground is 460.350 PL 136.5 it is low power/simplex only so you would have to be very close the same goes for the old fireground 453.325 PL 136.5 however im not sure if any departments still use that
You can also try the following talk groups on the 800mhz EDACS system which are rather inactive on a regular basis but i have noticed they may become active on "all hands" type days
06.097
06-102
06-103
12-015

Thank you so much, I'll punch those frequencies in my scanner and give it a listen. I'm more interested in the Nassau county fire companies near the queens border, seems like they've been active recently. I saw a valley stream engine in Jamaica the other day, pretty cool to see.

Nassau County doesn't have a county wide EMS frequency do they?

Your welcome and im not positive but i think Valley stream uses 46.10 for tone outs and 46.32 to talk to dispatch and they may have their own low powered freq for fireground
I have been told Elmont has been experimenting with some 700mhz P25 freqs but i myself have not yet got activity on them ULS License - Trunked Public Safety 700 MHz License - WQWU249 - ELMONT FIRE DISTRICT - Frequencies Summary

Nassau has a EMS frequency 154.115 but its not exactly "county wide" in the sense that it would alert ambulances from every department but it is what a couple of the EMS companies such as Wantagh Levittown use and i think Long Beach EMS may use this freq as well
Ambulances also use a talkgroup on the county P25 system for hospital intake

Long Beach Does Not Use and Never Has Used 154.115--Things Might have Changed Over the Years when i did live in Nassau --these were the Vollie Ambulance Corps Used on Tone Outs--Wantagh/Levittown---Mineola---Bellmore/Merrick---Atlantic Beach Rescue---Malverne

For Valley Stream--46.100 tone out / 46.200 was battalion freq but fireground is 453.8125--46.32 is the 1/6/7 battalion

You Can Also Try the Crossband Repeaters Listed in the Database

I stand corrected - i must have been thinking Atlantic Beach and Mineola as well still uses 154.115
And yes its more likely that Valley Stream uses 46.20
Bellmore-Merrick EMS have their own freq 460.175

VSFD , 46.10 for dispatch. Once on the call they operate on 46.20. On scene they operate on UHF, 453.8125, PL: 186.2 I listen to them every time I go home to see my Mom.

You can monitor Nassau's dispatch for a number of departments on 453.8750, PL 100.0. 46.20's UHF is 460.5375, DPL 423 ... but I find 46.2 easier to hear, even while in Valley Stream.

Awesome! I'll punch those in, feel free to list anymore if you can. Is there a mutual aid established between FDNY and The bordering Nassau County towns in terms of a fire or a large incident. If memory serves me right, I've seen FDNY boats aiding Jersey City when there's fires on piers and Mount Vernon when there was that huge fire on the bridge/factory a few years back. I wonder if there's a frequency established or if they are just giving spare radios to communicate with the lead.

Thank you! I programmed it exactly like you have it in my xts5000, haven't heard anything yet but would you happen to have a second zone of frequencies?

You may also want to try 46.12 or the crossband 460.3875 as im pretty sure thats what some of the northern Nassau/queens depts use such as Great Neck
As far as interop with FDNY goes , im not positive but FDNY has been known to use 153.830 which is a state wide interop channel some Nassau depts may have this freq in some radios as well
I do know for sure that Nassau tends to have 45.88 in their low band radios which is another statewide interop channel but i have only heard them using that when interop-ing with Suffolk...

I'm going to make a second zone of 16 channels for my UHF xts5000. which frequencies should I add to fill the bank? Besides the ones already listed here on this thread.
