I'm using Proscan software to program my scanner and when I disconnect the cable the scanner shuts off and won't start up. when i connect back up to the computer it works again. Can't figure it out. can anyone help

What scanner? Serial port, or USB port? Are you shutting down the software before disconnecting the scanner?

I figured it out. I had to reset
Sounds like a portable scanner that is powered by the USB connection and either has dead or no batteries installed. Just taking a guess based on the vague info.
