I am using a Yaesu FT-7900r as my base station radio currently. I have a mobile mag mount antenna that isn’t giving me the best performance and I’m looking to upgrade. Would a simple vertical antenna or a dipole antenna be better for all around performance on 2m and 70cm. I’m very new to ham radio and still trying to learn so the simpler the better. If you have any other suggestions for my setup, please offer them.

Your rig is only as good as your antenna system. Get some great coax like LMR400 and an antenna with some gain. I love my Comet GP9 but it's expensive.

For local talking on FM simplex and repeaters, you want vertical since everyone else is vertical.

Get a Comet GP6 or GP9 or the equivalent Diamond X-300 or X-510. Use LMR-400 coax.

If you don't have enough cash for those, make a dual band J-Pole.

And the higher the better. For VHF/UHF height is king.

I used a home built vertical dipole on my car and it worked very well. Mounting on newer cars might be an issue, but this was back when cars had real bumpers
