Last week while working a cliff rescue at Black’s Beach the IC asked to switch to “Lifeguard Direct.” Didn’t see anything on the database. Is this their version of a Fire direct radio to radio freq like what FD uses in a building with poor reception?

Direct means the output of the repeater...also known as simplex. Used for close operations where one can not Transmit to the active repeater. Some people call talk around...meaning talk around the repeater not thru it.

To hear direct you would have to be close to the person keying down on the radio...

SD Lifeguards is on a trunked system

I would speculate they were in fact referring to SND 8DIR...since they refer to FIREMARS direct as "FIREMARS-D". Being part of SD Fire Rescue, it would seem confusing to train to call FIREMARS "direct" when all their radios fire zones have a "direct" as such named channel in them. In the past, they have called FIREMARS, FIREMARS. Next time I am at a cliff rescue where they call to ue it, i will try and confirm.
