If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Any of you have one of these 3220 or the VHF version with a full keypad? If you do can you live dial or buffer dial the star and the pound key with it? Tk-3180 had to have a special firmware load in order to do this. I have an irrigation control customer that has been using 3180 for years but those are out of production. Kenwood does not seem to be able to answer this question even with an email to their special firmware support people. Maybe they're all confused with the merge with E F Johnson. At any rate I'm not willing to purchase a full keypad radio at this time for the customer if it doesn't fit the bill.

Thanks!

Not sure if this answers your question but if you depress the side PTT button and the keypad * or # key at the same time, then the * or # DTMF tones are sent out.

Great that's good to hear that's one way for live dial. The other is buffer dialing where you enter in up to 30 some-odd DTMF numbers and then press to push to talk and it sends it all in a string can you do that? An example will be like * 1 * 2 * 3 * 6 * 9 #. Will it take the first * and send it from the buffer?

Thank you for the time!

I programmed one of the side keys for auto dial and could not get the results you want. I think you want “store and forward” for the DTMF

Yes, not Auto dial but store and forward. With the keypad turned on, you could enter a string as I described above with a leading star and it will accept it with modified firmware in the x180 series.

Yeah we've been chatting, neither one of us have a full keypad NX3220. I'm calling Kenwood today to lean on them. Either confirm it works out of the box or if it needs custom firmware or just send me a demo so I can figure it out myself.

It does work.

Under BUTTON ASSIGNMENT

* and # Buttons Set to "Direct Button"

Primary Keypad Ops " AUTODIAL"

Then under DTMF encode

Check the "STORE and SEND" box.

Just tried it and it would make the Toro guys happy.

Thank you for your response Jim. I got confirmation that the radio does exactly as you described from a third-party.

So in summary to all reading, the radio will do store and forward DTMF dialing out of the box and there is a checkbox to enable the star and pound keys to be direct dial or used as control functions.

Correct, out of the box with the programming steps pictured. Standard (not custom) F/W 1.3 and the latest KPG-3DN. I did a string like *2*3*4 for the test.
