Squelch

Well today i fire up the PSR-500 and suddenly notice squelch noise full time. I am in P-25 trunking mode, no analog selected. It appears to still be scanning, and i can hear the data channel as it goes by. Just have squelch and static noise all the time. Did reset no avail. Maybe time for a new 436...

Try taking off the antenna and tuning to a frequency with nothing transmitting on it. Does adjusting the squelch all the way up or down make the noise disappear?

If not, it is likely a problem with the squelch circuit.

Squelch knobs have been known to wear out over time. You may need to send it in for repair, if it is worth keeping.

Try spraying the knobs with contact cleaner before doing anything more drastic.
