Caught several of the tankers, birddogs, and helicopters on my SDR that feeds FlightRadar24. Watched FG442 (tanker 42) do a racetrack circuit dropping several loads and then bug out for refill.

The fire is less than 15km due south of where I currently sit.

Rocky View and Redwood Meadows FDs are staging in Redwood Meadows for potential municipal action (evacuating, etc) although it is not a concern at this time. They are on RVC AFRRCS channels.

Foothills FD are also working on grass fires in the northwest corner of their county, and are working on AFRRCS Foothills Disp 4.

Saw 2 Foothills bush-buggy type trucks booking it W on Stoney from near James Mckevitt around 2:30 PM today. May have been where they were going.

The fire is roughly in the red-circled area (Fisher West Trail, off McLean Creek Trail).

The voluntary evacuation is for properties on Highway 762 between Highway 22 and 178 Ave (which is roughly where 762 - the north-south highway on the right side of the image - jogs to the east the first time, south of 22).

Nice, I think that is my FR24 feed, T-YYC6, but I can't remember if that's my feed ID or not.

42 has made a bunch of racetrack orbits/dumps, gone back to Springbank (I think) to refill, and come back out. From the sounds of Firenet, the fire is pretty much surrounded now, will probably go Being Held in a short period of time.

Update on the McLean Creek fire:

The fire is approximately 100 hectares in size and currently contained to the McLean Creek area of Kananaskis. It is not expected to grow overnight, and there will be crews working to complete fire breaks to keep it contained. Tankers, helicopters, and ground crews will continue to work the fire in the morning, and municipal fire crews from Redwood Meadows, Rocky View, and Foothills will continue to plan for community protection in case it is necessary.

That's probably to secure funding to assist in the voluntarily evacuated and/or if they need to do things like restrict access to part of the county, pay for out-of-district responders (for example, Banff FD and the province each have a "structural sprinkler protection unit" in the area for assistance) etc.

Wildfire Branch has posted this update just a few moments ago:

27 MAY (Champion Lakes Wildfire): 1 Out of Control wildfire 15 km SW of Bragg Creek, approximately 100 hectares in size.
  • 35 firefighters, 5 helicopters, 5 airtankers and 4 pieces of heavy equipment worked to establish guard on the wildfire yesterday. Favourable winds had the wildfire moving in a NW direction.
  • 17 firefighters and the 4 pieces of heavy equipment continued establishing guard on the East flank overnight. No significant growth occured.
  • 28 firefighters, 3 airtankers, 7 helicopters and 8 pieces of heavy equipment have redeployed to the wildfire this morning. Priority is to re-enforce the guard around the fire to limit any further spread.
NEXT UPDATE BY 1530hrs

The reality is, it's "out of control", but it's in a box that is guarded on 3 sides by lines of retardant and 1 side by a dozer line. It's not expected to breach that perimeter unless something drastic happens weather-wise.

It's so dry out there, even after all the winter snowfall. The relative humidity at the fire right now is 14%. Good thing rain is forecast for tomorrow.

It's 3C, 94% RH, and drizzle on the fire at 7:30 AM Tues. That's encouraging for the firefighters to get this fire out soon.
