Fast Shipping, dunno about returns

But I would rather buy from mom and pop establishments

I've never bought a scanner from Amazon, but between myself and my wife, we do buy lots of other stuff through them. We rarely have any problems, especially when the order is fulfilled through Amazon. Even when it isn't, Amazon provides the final product support to protect the buyer.

I bought mine from Amazon with no issues. Now that I see how my local retailers are doing I would go with a mom and pop. I think’ pricing is about the same.

If Amazon has the radio you want at a good price, I would go for it. I've bought a few from them because they had the best price at the time. The fast shipping and easy returns is a big plus. I always pay attention to who the actual seller is on Amazon and I try to avoid purchasing anything that is sold through a 3rd party.

But I would rather buy from mom and pop establishments

Everyone probably would, but in 2018 there aren't a whole lot of mom and pop stores selling scanners..

I’m a Prime member and love Amazon, ive ordered scanners from them in the past, and had to return a couple and they are the best at returns, gave me no problems at all, soon as you eternities it, and UPS scans it, they refund your money. Couldn’t ask for better

There are mom and pop ham radio dealers that I've had great experiences with.
Ham City and R+L Electronics are two. Each had better prices and service than Amazon.

In case you haven't heard, R+L is not carrying the Uniden SDS100, if that's what you're in the market for. I don't know why.

R+L is selling a BCT15X for $220 + shipping; Amazon has it for a $145 out the door. Amazon also beats them by $50 on a Whistler TRX2. I absolutely support local businesses when I can, but our hobby has become quite expensive. I shop for radios more so based on where I can get the best price, as opposed to based on any feeling of loyalty to a particular business. Don't get me wrong - I would much prefer to walk into a shop, talk with a knowledgeable staff member, make an informed purchase, and know the business stands behind the product they sell. But I'm living in 2018 and the market has a lot of purchasing options for me, I'm voting with my wallet.

I was wondering if anyone has any pros or cons from purchasing a scanner from amazon?

Amazon sometimes has good prices on scanners, but most of the time their pricing is higher. It is also very important to know who you're actually purchasing the scanner from. Many times the sale is through a third-party seller, and it would behoove you to do some research on them first. Amazon makes this easy, but it's another step to take. Look for "Ships and Sold by Amazon" to know your going to have a smooth transaction. If it ships from somewhere else, you need to deal with the vendor first, and that is not always smooth.

Having said that, Amazon will assist with any problem you have with a purchase.

You can't go wrong with Universal Radio or HRO.

I, too, prefer to buy local when I can but that's not always possible. I live in a town of about 200,000 but there are no shops that cater to hams or scanner enthusiasts. I also play mandolin in a small country band and the only music store within a hundred miles thinks the only instruments in the world are pianos and guitars. Therefore, Amazon is frequently used and, shopping carefully, eBay.

Amazon's Jeff Bezo admitted publicly the other day that Amazon doesn't always have the best price. I've found that to be the case quite often. They have also backed-out on great advertised prices many times! Buyer beware!

He also treats employees like they're not human, then he replaces them with robots. I will no longer do business with Amazon. Price is not everything.

Nobody always has the best price. But Amazon has the best price often enough that I always check it before making an online purchase.

FYI - you're lining Bezos' pockets right now by visiting radioreference.com, which is hosted with Amazon Web Services.

Not much I can do about that. But I do block Amazon's (and others) Advertising Trackers (that hide out on Radio Reference) using Ghostery!
