To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm about to start programming a new TK-5210, hardware Ver 2.0, with a mix of FM, NFM, & P25 personalities/channels.

Which software version should I use, KPG-95DGN v8.23 or KPG-95DG v7.01?

Planning to use this radio as conventional-only no trunking. Some FM channels with NOAA WX & Amateur Radio & Marine, some NFM channels with Public Safety & MURS, & some P25 channels Public Safety & Fed; with TX inhibit on everything except Ham or where FCC authorized.

I'd like the volume on an FM channel to be the same as a NFM channel.

Read this new 5210 with both & found 95DGN has 12.5 kHz "channel spacing" only & 95DG has 25 & 12.5 kHz. I didn't find a way to select either FM or NFM for a given personality with 95DGN or 95DG, in the way I am accustomed to with TK-2180/3180 programming. Maybe I am missing something.

Does changing the "channel spacing" affect RX bandwidth/RX audio level & TX deviation? If so, I am inclined to use 95DG, so volume is consistent.

You want just the DG. So KPG-95DG v7.01. If you load any dat file into 95DGN, it will find all Wideband channels and convert them to Narrowband. So don't touch anything with the 95DGN program.

Your wide/narrow selection will be per Personality, under Channel Spacing. Select between 12.5 and 25kHz.

However, DGN will correctly allow you to enter 2m amateur frequencies with 25kHz bandwidth. And if you mark a Personality as Receive Only, then any frequency can be marked as 12.5 or 25 and the radio will adjust accordingly, i.e. your volume will be equal. So if you truly are programming receive only on the Marine, MURS and NOAA or other wideband channel, then 95DGN will work for you.

Ok, thank you for the explanation, I understand.

I now see as you explain that 95DGN, when the personality is configured for RX-only, the software offers the option of 25/12.5, didn't notice that earlier.

In the meantime, I followed my inclination & programmed the radio with 95DG figuring "what's the worst that could happen, brick it?" :) I also was curious to see if it would accept programming with its current version of firmware.

It is working as desired, thank you much norcalscan.
