As I was enjoying listening to the City of Santa Clara on their SVRCS, it occurred to me that the city was one of the first South Bay cities to push the technological envelope and move to a P25 Phase 2 system.

...and then I remembered that Santa Clara was one of the first (only?) municipalities in the south bay to use an 800MHz Type II system.

So it made me wonder... There are more populous cities (e.g. San Jose) and there are more affluent cities (Palo Alto, Mountain View). Is there something special about the City of Santa Clara that motivates them to invest in the latest technology?

Don't know, but a higher tax base might have something to do with it. A lot of high dollar companies in Santa Clara, or at least there was back then.

I'm sure there are several reason why they went 800, probably help from a large radio vendor had something to do with it. Back then Santa Clara wasn't as big as it is now, and probably could have done fine on UHF like San Jose PD, and had better interoperability.
In the region, VHF pairs have always been hard to find. UHF was easier. Back then, 800 was wide open.

You're correct about UHF congestion. But other municipalities have made use in T-Band.

Wasn't Fremont Fire on Control 2 for a while and covered the unincorporated bay front area north of 237. I sort of remember it was a volunteer Dept. and not connected to City of Fremont. Think it was swallowed up by Mtn. View in the late 70's or early 80's.
