I've been looking around for the answer to a simple question. What data interface is used to connect a GPS with the SDS100?

I have looked at the Uniden solutions:
GPS:
https://www.uniden.com/shop/communication/serial-gps-receiver/
...and the cable:
https://www.uniden.com/shop/communication/gps-usb-cable/

Back in the "old days", this is how Uniden showed connecting a GPS to a scanner:

ConnectingAGpsReceiver < UnidenMan4 < TWiki
...the GPS show in the diagram used a serial interface that was connected to a DB9 connector. We needed a simple cable to route the serial signal from the GPS into the proprietary connectors on our radios.

I have a similar Garmin GPS that I'd like to see if I could press into service for my SDS100, and just like the picture, it has a serial interface that is presented in a DB9 connector. The specific model is a GPS18x PC:
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/27594

Now I see the Uniden GPS adapter cable accepts a din connector and presents it to the SDS100 via a miniUSB. Is it simply routing the serial signal to a specific pin? Or is there some sort of serial to USB conversion embedded somewhere inside the cable?

Anyway, thanks for reading this far. I may forget all of this and just get the GPS cable and another GPS from Amazon. They have a model for $30 that appears to work with Uniden. Anyone else try this out?

No, this is the first time I've seen this. If the question doesn't get answered and you go ahead and buy this, please make a post letting those of us, or me, know how it works.

Thank you for the info end the link. I miss a lot of the threads due to my vision or lack of it and I appreciate that link!

I bought the GPS unit about 2 years ago for my BCD436HP and bought the new cable needed when I got my SDS100. I was saving up to get the internal GPS unit installed after my trip a month ago but as we know that's no longer available. $30 is a good price. If I wasn't saving for the battery charger right now, I probably go ahead and buy one for use on my 436 so I could use it and my 100 at the same time on road trips. Hopefully they'll stick around for a while and I can get one later.

There's a whole thread in this forum (a few pages back) talking about using the BR-355/S4:

How to make a GPS for the SDS-100 $42

Thanks so much. This is exactly what I was looking for. The SDS100 has a custom wiring for the miniUSB.

Since I am more handy with a credit card than a soldering iron and a heat gun, I'll probably go the commercial route and buy the GPS and cable. Given that the application is for a mobile environment, I trust Uniden more than my home made skills to make a robust adapter.

Just got BR-355-S4 today. Plugged the GPS into the Uniden BC-UTCG, and everything worked like a charm. Also removed GPS and the BC-UTCG charged my radio.

Just so everything is wrapped up in one post...

Here is a link to the ScannerMaster site. They have the cables in stock and they have a nice video showing how to make the connection.

Here is a link to the GPS on Amazon:

And here is a link to the manufacturer's product page:
BR-355-S4

...you can get specifications and a PDF copy of the manual.

One quick update on my post, did a little searching for the Uniden product. Found a copy of the manual here.
http://www.uniden.info/download/ompdf/BC-GPSKom.pdf
...interesting to note that the Uniden product has an older version of the GPS chipset/receiver (SiRF Star III vs. SiRF S4)
