I have a few questions about the Sentinel Software. I figured out how to edit the channel descriptions from what is in the database to what makes more sense for me. This leads me into wanting to sort the channels by talk group Id numbers in the spreadsheet like display.

1. I can sort the view but when I upload them to the scanner they do not save in talk group order. Is there anyway to save them in talk group order on the device?

2. I would also like to manually change the service types of each individual channel or Talk group using the software but I cannot edit them. Is there anyway to manually do this via Sentinel?

Create your own favorite list and then edit to your heart's content.

When you are editing that Favorites List in Sentinel, drill down to the department level. It the right pane, you'll see a green plus sign, a red X, up and down arrows then a symbol with AoverZ and an arrow. Click that AoverZ symbol to open the Sort window. You can choose up to three sort orders (primary, secondary, tertiary) and whether Ascending or Descending.

In this same pane, you can also modify the Service Types by clicking on the cell and the dropdown box where the arrow is and assigning whatever you desire from the list. You cannot choose/use something that isn't in the list however.

If you for some reason would like to edit it directly in the database you'll have to go to the HPDB folder on the SDcard, you can access it when you connect the USB cable to read or write in mass storage mode, and use Notepad to edit the s_000051.hpd file. It's a plain text file.

Do a search for Spotsylvania to find your systems. One of them will look something like this:
T-Group TGroupId=24369 TrunkId=8651 Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Management Off 38.183466 -77.649711 25.0 Circle
TGID Tid=304548 TGroupId=24369 (Ch. 10) Off 6010 ALL 8
TGID Tid=300971 TGroupId=24369 (Ch. 2) Off 6002 ALL 8
TGID Tid=300973 TGroupId=24369 (Ch. 3) Off 6003 ALL 8
TGID Tid=300974 TGroupId=24369 (Ch. 4) Off 6004 ALL 8
TGID Tid=300975 TGroupId=24369 (Ch. 5) Off 6005 ALL 8
TGID Tid=300976 TGroupId=24369 (Ch. 6) Off 6006 ALL 8
TGID Tid=303474 TGroupId=24369 (Ch. 7) Off 6007 ALL 8
TGID Tid=303473 TGroupId=24369 (Ch. 8) Off 6008 ALL 8
TGID Tid=304547 TGroupId=24369 (Ch. 9) Off 6009 ALL 8
TGID Tid=300989 TGroupId=24369 Admin Off 6023 ALL 8
TGID Tid=300851 TGroupId=24369 Dispatch (Ch. 1) Off 6001 ALL 3

Set the cursor to the left on the line with the (ch. 10) text and hold down the shift key while doing arrow down on the keyboard. The whole line will be highlighted and then push delete on the keyboard and the whole line are moved to the buffer. Go down to the line that have the text Admin and hold down shift and then push insert to move the line from buffer to the textfile. Now you'll have those ch. TGs in order if you also move that ch. 1 TG to the top. You can also use the mouse to highlight lines and right click to do cut and paste but my experiance are that it then are easier to make mistakes.

The 8 after ALL are the service type.

All updates are only done to the database. More or less each line in the database use a reference number that the update search for and then rewrite that line with the updated information. It doesn't touch anything else.

Any sorting done to the database will stay intact unless you rebuild the whole database.

Favorite lists can only be edited manually or systems can be copied over from the database that will completly overwrite the ones in the favorite lists.

But if you have copied systems from the database to a favorite list and there have been updates to any of those system, how would you know that you have to update your favorite list? If you simply re-copy systems from the database each week you will loose all your personal editing you have done.

The update process should ideally include searching the favorite lists for the reference numbers, if they haven't been stripped in the copy process, and alert the user that there's an update available and display the differencies with a question Update Y/N? for each record.
