Default Skip only in texas or everywhere?

I just want to know if skip happened only in USA or it could happened in Canada too?

I tried several time here in Canada, but received nothing. Do i have to open the squelch to receive skip?

I tried with my R75 and Par SWL antenna and also with my BCD996T and Diamond discone but no luck.

thanks for giving me tips to succeed.

It can happen in Canada too. When I used to live in the Toronto area back I guess in the late 80's I heard some low band skip, especially the CHP on a cheapo Radio Shack mag mount antenna. A few years back when I was still living up there I also heard good UHF skip coming from Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Where about in Canada are you?

I also would give this web page a look at which can help determine the tropo ducting forecasts, Tropospheric Ducting Forecast for VHF & UHF Radio & TV

Matt

thanks for the info, i'm in Montreal, QC.

Do I have to open the squelch to hear skip? or just let the scanner search the low band with the squelch close?

no leave it closed you should get skip stronger than some local stations-most of the time.you might load your scaner with the rr list's for MO-NE-MD-NC with there PL's if you get noise on the freq's.i dont think the old way of knowing if the bands open by loading 35 and 43 pager freqs still works.theres no low pagers around here anymore.also try V-UHF QSO real time maps

When an opening occurs, you will know it. Try only programming/monitoring frequencies that are out of state or country in your case. The VHF low freqs. I monitor are all out of state, hundreds of miles away from my antenna. I pick up VHF- low skip on a homemade super j-pole cut for 160.000 MHz and a stacked 6 element j-pole cut for 453.000 MHz. Rubber duck works too.
