How often do you hear US Military traffic in the upper part of the 49 MHz band? Especially now that the older generation 43/44/46/49 MHz lowband FM cordless phones aren't nearly as common.

Cursory Internet searches show that military SINCGARS (30-88 MHz) equipment is relatively low-powered. From 1-2 watts to 10 watts for manpack portable radios to 20-50 watts for mobile/base installations.

I know the 49.0000 to 49.5800 MHz range is used pretty heavily by various companies. Pike Electric being one of the big ones.

Regularly - Mass NG has multiple 49 Mhz Repeaters (45 Mhz inputs) linked via VHF High

Also, some reported SINCGARS frequencies (FOUO Documents) have actually been caught in conventional mode fro time-time

Pike trucks have been seen up and down the East Coast after major storms too. All of their trucks (that I've seen anyway) have full quarter-wave stainless steel whips with ball mounts. Those massive ultility trucks probably make amazing ground planes.

It appears that Pike also has several repeaters in addition to base-mobile and mobile-to-mobile operations. Licenses have been found for repeaters on 49.520, 49.540 and 49.580 MHz in WV, VA, NC, SC and KY,

---------------------------------

On a somewhat unrelated note, I know you generally skip the 26-29.7 range due to the high number of freebander/out of band CB stations, especially during openings to Latin America. Now that more and more export radios (aka "10-meter radios") are being sold with frequency coverage from 25.615-30.105 or even up to 30.555 instead of 25.615-28.305, I imagine you'll start hearing more unidentified traffic in the 29.700 to 31 MHz range (in AM, FM and/or SSB).

I've heard a CWID on 27.4300 MHz FM (141.3 PL) several times over the past few days, IDing as WPGU796 (FRIENDS OF THE MOUNTAIN) - Prince William County, VA. I'm yet to hear voice traffic on this frequency but this is the first time I've logged legal/licensed activity in the 25.000 - 26.965 MHz range (low channels) or 27.410 - 28.000 MHz range (high channels). Considering the fact that 27.430, 27.450, 27.470, 27.490, 27.510 and 27.530 are still technically assigned business frequencies, although mostly abandoned, I find this to be an interesting setup. Especially when you take into account the vast amount of vacant VHF lowband channels available in that part of Virginia.

Unfortunately, the 27.43-27.53 MHz range is one of the most heavily pirated area as far as freeband CB stations go. Generally with AM or SSB, but some FM has been heard. Next time the band is open to Europe, scan 27.60125 to 27.99125 (27.600 to 27.990 works just as well) in 10 kHz steps, FM mode. This is the UK FM "27/81" 40 channel CB allocation. UK CB stations have been heard on 27.78125 (UK FM Channel 19), 27.84125 (UK FM Channel 25), 27.90125 (UK FM channel 31) 27.97125 (UK FM channel 38), 27.98125 (UK FM channel 39) and 27.99125 (UK FM channel 40). It appears that channels 14, 19, 31 and 38/39/40 are all used as calling frequencies in the UK and elsewhere, in addition to the other legal and illegal CB calling frequencies.

The UK, via their Community Audio Distribution Service (CADS) allows for Church services to be rebroadcast (in FM mode only) on any channel in the regular 26.965-27.405 "mid band" CB band and in the 27.60125-27.99125 MHz "UK FM" CB band. Ireland has a similar service called Wireless Public Address System (WPAS) that uses three sets of 40 channels, both AM and FM modes are allowed. 26.965-27.405 MHz (40 channels, same as standard CB band, AM/FM), 27.60125-27.99125 MHz (40 channels, same frequency plan as the UK FM band, but Ireland allows both AM and FM on this band!) and a third overlapping channel plan, 27.605-27.995 MHz, 40 channels straight 10 kHz sequence, AM/FM both allowed. Considering the difference between 27.60125 MHz and 27.605 MHz is not nearly enough for AM or FM, I imagine there is a considerable amount of interference between the various church broadcasts.

If I may ask what does your HF, VHF low band monitoring station consist of?

Back in the 80s there was an oil field company with a strong signal on 25.xxx mhz (I'd have to check my old logs to be sure of freq). I heard them regularly and a few other businesses but nothing recently except IFBs as far as legitimate stations go.
