Thumbs up Space Shuttle Discovery Launch Weds Night

SPACE SHUTTLE DISCOVERY is scheduled for launch 11 March 09 Weds night at 9:20 pm EDT....headed for the International Space Station, so this should be another spectacular night view for everyone on the eastern seaboard....

of course, shuttle downlink comms are on 259.7Mhz AM.....

remember that the shuttle program is scheduled to END next year ! so take advantage of the few remaining opportunities to view and listen .....and nighttime launches are even rarer !

How strong is the downlink signal? Can I pick this up on a rubber duckie antenna in Jersey or is a better antenna needed?

So, I probably won't be able to hear the launch in Seattle, but will I be able to hear coms when the shuttle flies over my area? Or does it not work like that.

I've never tried to listen to space before. How very intriguing.

You won't hear anything during the ascent in Seattle, sorry. And you definitely won't hear anything (voice wise) once it's in orbit.

actually, every time you've ever turned on a radio you've been listening to Space.....

Barefootdipole

PS: put 145.800 Mhz FM in your scanner and keep it there..you'll hear the ISS and Shuttle hams operating, when they get a chance, as they pass over your area,,,,

Unfortunately, the weather is not going to be optimal in NY/NJ area. Overcast with showers. True, though night launches are rare.

C-130 pararescue and medical teams with c/s HERKY 221 and HERKY 231 arrived at TAL-sites in Spain Moron AB and French Istres AB this afternoon. Several SATCOM tests on 261.875 Mhz, bad comms.

MSNBC is reporting the launch has been scrubbed due to a fuel leak.

New launch time is Monday, it's possible they might be able to move up to Sunday. If they don't launch by the 17th though, it's postponed until April. Anything other than a Sunday launch would result in a much shorter mission.

love it when they say "no earlier than sunday"......read betwen the lines on NASA speak as only a miracle for it to be before monday....even that is with toes crossed....this problem has really been nagging this mission...

Hmmm... not sure what you mean. If all goes as planned, they'll go Sunday. "NET" (No Earlier Than) is a standard term.

This problem just popped up this afternoon, and has never occurred to this level before, so it's not been "nagging this mission" either...

Hey~

Here's a nice little pdf file showing some Nasa Freq's and TG's. Especially nice for those in the FL area.
(If this has been posted elsewhere and this is not place for this I apologize, still learning your all's etiquette here).
Cheers.
