Removing Dead Air from Recording?

Anyone know of a program that will remove the dead spots in a recording? I have many large MP3/WAV files from an old program that did not have vox controls. I'd like to find a program that would remove all the dead space in between transmissions. Any suggestions?

I could do it in real time by playing the file and using the WAVE out as a recording input and use the vox program I made. Just looking for something to do the processing in batch automatically.

Audacity works very well. After downloading, click on the "Effects" tool bar and then click on "Truncate Silence".
