Default CTCSS Tones

OK, maybe the pro's can help me with this. Motorola only used to have certain PL's in their radios, I read something on a website which gave an explanation of why public safety agencies use the PL's they do. Does anyone know of this website or know the PL tones that are in older equipment? If I remember correctly 127.3 and 151.4 were two of them. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

It all depends on the area: Some areas the frequency coordinators will coordinate the PLs, some areas won't. For instance, my area the agency gets to decide - Most of our PLs around here are either 100.0 or 114.8.

I think the frequency coordinators in all areas should coordinate the PLs - there has been two instances in my county where the fire depts have set up repeaters - didn't have the PL's coordinated, and accidently repeating a transmitter that is on the other side of the state.

Another boo-boo I've seen is having everybody using the same tone on all frequencies. When intermod crops up, there might as well be NO tones on the repeaters.

That may well be a legacy of the past, when the radios only supported one tone.

I know the person who choose a PL tone for a PD repeater where I live, (123.0), he just picked cause he liked that it went in sequential order. Lots of research... what's he going to do when he needs to pick a DPL? :P

It can be any tone, but back then radios were only capabile of holding one PL for all the channels. If you had a 16 channel radio - all the channels would have to be the same PL.

From your experience, what is the best tone to use? One that doesn't have problems like 136.5 and 131.8, because I'm sure ya know the DCS turn off code is 134.4 so if there any DCS around you you'll get a kurchunk for no reason.
