Default Radio Site Standards and Considerations

Does anyone know where I can find a good document on standards and considerations for building radio sites in the 21st century?

For example a good white paper from anyone on how to plan a system and how to build the site, etc?

Are you familiar with Motorola's R56 standards manual? It covers just about everything revolving around building a site.

I have the R65 manual but was looking for something written by an agency or other entity as an example I can write for my agency ;-) thanks.

Most people quote R56.
It is based on other available standards so it is not Motorola Proprietary.
They have just compiled it.

If you want one that is independent you will need to have someone knowledgeable assemble it for you.

I don't recommend that to my clients, but will gladly charge them when they insist.

Just a quick note, there is much more to building a site then just the standards. I would never recommend any agency take this upon themselves without having experienced staff or a competent consultant.

You can always look up bids for other agencies - it's public information. But like N_Jay said, you should have someone who's done it before go through it with/for you. Just because another agency put out an RFP for a site, doesn't mean it's a good RFP.

R56 is a respected document. The EDACS people (whatever their name du jour is) have a similar document that is just as good, but not as well known. As far as white papers are concerned, there are a number of articles in the various trade magazines, but nothing that I would classify as really "good".

Building a site is a pretty complex undertaking that encompasses real estate, zoning, environmental and asthetic concerns, and that's all before you break ground. I have yet to see any one white paper that comes close to addressing everything that needs to be considered.

But I've often thought about writing one.

It is common in military contracting circles to include verbiage such as "installation must meet Motorola R56 standards" or BICSI, or EIA/TIA, depending on the project. If we had contractors that asked what those standards were, we were usually skeptical whether or not they knew what they were doing. Likewise, if they wanted a "copy", we'd tell them to go buy it themselves!!
