Default Trunking Pager

I was reading on the form about a company working on a trunking voice pager that can be used on a trunking system, just like a voice pager is used on a conventional system.

My question is I have not heard anymore about this idea, I was just interested if it is still in the planning stages or if the whole thing has been scraped because of a lack of interest.

Please if anyone knows let me know and if one is available were I can buy it along with the proramming software and other items to program it.

Thanks in advance

David

To the best of my knowlege there are no trunking pagers on the market.
It is a common request, but never has been a big enough market to get anyone to design and build one.

What you may have read was a comment I made regarding a M rep's discussions with a roomful of Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs members in 2002.

They said that the Min V will be taken over by CGISS and that ideas being considered were 800mhz capability, including trunking, and possibly an LCD as well.

I don't know how much stock I put in one man's commentary 2 1/2 years ago. Granted, ideas have to come from somewhere, but a lot of people have said a lot of things in the past as well.

I believe it is possible but not effective for the following reasons.

1-The old Pocsag pagers (and pre)used a simple means of timing to prolong the battery life -6 weeks on a disposable alkaline.
The method was poersaving the rxer together with looking at the address's just after the preamble-if it belonged -continue-if not return to power save.Due to the speed the pagers poer on/off ratio was related to the data used-512/1200/2400 etc.

From my experience with trunked systems -their biggest downfall was the lack of powersave methods in order to cope with battery life on the handies. Most Control channels are 100% data duty-cycle.
Perhaps some of the companies could produce a similar set to the standard radio excluding the TX side in order to cut costs-would do the same thing.

Alternately one could interconnect onto a PABX port with a link to a local paging company's paging service or inhouse. Thus using an off the shelf cheap product.

I have often thought of this:incorperate a pocsag pager into a mobile Vhf set.Use the common antenna for additional coverage and they are on different IF frequencies. The output could be displayed on the radios screen if desired. If the page is sent out three time there is unlikely going to be any clashes , as the radio and pager would be muted.
Unfortunately time has not been my own so that idea has remained just that.

Regards

Bradley Glen

The Call Alert signaling could also be utilized as well, but yes I agree that battery life may be an option.

Charging it every night would probably be a requirement unless they utilized something like a fat Visar battery.

Personally, I don't really see how practical this would be.

The easiest thing I can think of would be to have a radio set up at the transmitter location setup on a VHF or UHF frequency that is set up for 2-tone paging...only difference is that the radio itself would have to be able to transmit the 2 tones. A GE Orion would work perfect for this, as you can configure it to send out a 2 tone page sequence every time the PTT is pushed.

If it was required to send something over it and a trunked channel, the dispatcher could just multiselect the talkgroup with the paging transmitter, and if the Orion idea was used, just transmit dead air for the few seconds that the radio is sending out the tones.

KISS people!
