recordings
Just an idea, to have a place to post recordings that were funny, major events ect. ect.
I am sure it has been suggested before.
This is the greatest radio site.
Thank you

I like this idea as well. It would be useful for funny or major traffic as the OP said, plus different systems have different sounds and ways of doing things. Having samples could illustrate this.

Just remember that technically its illegal to record the transmissions for playback for another person.
But I personally think its a good idea.

Sounds like a pretty good idea. I have around 120 recordings I've done in my SoCal directory...1.09GB mostly of pursuits and stuff.

I also recorded some good code 5 ops but would not be allowed to share them publicly for obvious reasons.
The scary thing is I've listened to many things I never did record otherwise this collection would be larger. Now I try to make it a habit to record things so I can keep them for archival purposes.

it's illegal to record, but not to listen? That's pretty silly.
anyone know why?
EDIT: anyway, I've got quite a few recordings myself. maybe someone should start up a topic for it, if there is hesitance for making it a main site feature.

We are not supposed to repeat what we hear, or use it for personal gain (or to evade the law). But I think there are many kinds of transmissions which do not contain sensitive information (for example that might jeopardize a prosecution) that would not upset anyone.
Just my $0.02

Nobody (in the USA) is being prosecuted for recorded scanner traffic that is posted online anywhere.
Audio recordings will take up a tremendous amount of server space and transfer bandwidth compared to what is already offered here. That means more expense for LB, which is why I voted against.

I do not want to see RR incur a significant additional expense for something like this. Perhaps a better solution is a forum dedicated to the topic, and all that is allowed is links to recordings posted elsewhere.

Not if we host our own files. Also it would be up to Lindsay to whether he is concerned about the cost or not.

Scanner audio does not have to be high quality. 16kbps mp3's would be just fine and would take up very little bandwith. If we host our own files and made it a main site feature, it becomes a mess trying to weed out all the dead links.
Heck, as much as I hate real, the site could encode them as low bitrate RM files.
I think making a topic dedicated to recordings and requiring people to host their own files would be the best solution though.

Not a good idea.
I think it would be cool; but unfortunately, I think it would bring undue and negative press and attention to this website. We already have half-witted military personnel making requests to remove frequencies.
That is all we need is unregulated recordings of what may or may not be legal interception of radio communications of the government (at all levels - local, state, fed, mil, etc.) and private radio communications - facetiously written.
I would have to say that it is not a good idea because it might open up a can of worms with which we don't want to deal.
In any case, as some have pointed out, it is up to Lindsay.
However, as some may have already done, I suggest starting your own web page, podcast, or group, and show off all the recordings you want. Make a link to it part of your RR signature.
