Thumbs down Radio Shack

Hey guy's the other day I walked into my local Radio Shack and asked if they had a 75-300 Ohm Balun and a Female N Connector to BNC Female. They asked me what they were and I basically had to find them for myself. I remember in the 70's when Radio Shack used to have Radios and Antennas and Scanners and SSB Radios etc... now it seems like they just have cell phones, comuters and very little anything to do with Radios. It seems like they just hire high school kids that have no clue about anything about radios. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

This is nothing new. I stopped going to radio shack years ago for that very reason. I don't even miss them anymore.

"Radio shack... you've got questions? We've got cellphones!"

I agree.... I mean we all know how they are. Well most stores are, the one I go to the manager still cares about scanners, etc. so he and his employees have a little knowledge. Guess he pushes a little knowledge on the employees.

If you think about there are alot more electronics out there now than in the 70s. Without RS were would you have to go to get things, besides ordering and waiting for them to arrive. Its mostly alot of kids that work there, but its really no different than most retail stores, the help knows little more than the customer. You get lucky every now and then when they have someone with some knowledge working there, we are kinda blessed here that we have some good ones right here on RR who do a great job of helping other members with getting things.

I love their employees that don't know anything, but think they know everything. I went in to buy a Pro-84 when they were on clearance for $30. The guy started explaining to me that this scanner would no longer work because everything is now digital and that's why they were on clearance. He said I had to buy "this scanner over here" (a Pro-96) if I wanted to listen to anything. He shut up pretty quick when I punched a couple frequencies into the Pro-84 and started hearing stuff almost immediately.

Maybe I'm lucky with my local 'Shacks.

At one, the employees I've dealt with can point me to the right bins from which I can pull various connectors, components, etc.

At another, I asked for a PRO-106 and, when I said there weren't any in the display to which the employee had pointed, he acted genuinely surprised, went to the back, and quickly returned with two... one for me and one to put in the display. He also recognized my name when I presented my credit card

" You've got questions. So do we!" Lat time I was in Radio Shack. You would of thought I asked for an oil change not coax cable lol. There are good radio shacks here though. Our Mod in the Colorado forum works there and is a great source of info.

I went into a RadioShack near Albany to pickup an F connector for a cable line this past summer. I walked in and went to the back where they had the bins. A few sec later the sales clerk came over to ask me what I was looking for. He was older than me in his mid 30's. I explained that I need a certain F connector, and I saw that they had about 6 different F connectors, some that came in multiples in a package. As me and him were looking through he grabbed one in a baggie on the top, shut the bin closed as I was still looking through and said "Here ya go". I told him that I didn't want that one, and his response was "There all the same" when clearly there was more options to choose from. He had no idea. So I explained that I didn't want that one and I opened the bin and found the one I wanted. And there was no one else in the entire store, me and him were the only ones there. Yup.
Does RadioShack have a training video that tells there employees to act as know it alls?

They seem to be worse to deal with when they are located within a "mega-mall" rather than a stand alone or within a small strip mall.

I loved Radio Shack when they sold me a couple of $500 GRE scanners for $289.00 a piece last Thanksgiving. Now that is a winning business model.....I didn't ask many questions but I did have to help them ringing up the sale.

I am still a frequent visitor to my area Radio Shack, but they've learned to let me just wander through until I find what I need. I used to ask them for certain items, but the people there were simply nothing more than kids needing a job.

Don't get me wrong, I still love Radio Shack, but "Radio Shack! You got questions, we got deer in headlight stares".

It's more like: "You've got questions, we've got answers".
But there's a slim chance that they are the RIGHT answers...

RS is nothing but a junk electronics store. I went in one recently to look and it was mostly cell phones and computer wireless cards. They had ONE scanner in there and it wasn't even digital. It was a $99 special. RS sucks.
