That would be like finding a nickel in the couch and using it to pay down an $1800 credit card balance instead of buying a stick of gum. Poor Richard's musings notwithstanding, at least NASA's stick of gum had a potential benefit to society.

If you want to pay down the national debt, ask each American to pony up about $35k, rather than begrudging NASA the <$1 per person they spent on a lost satellite/launcher.

(Figures based on ~$10 trillion national debt vs. $273 million satellite/launcher, a ~36000:1 ratio).
