Default Remote PC Control

Has anyone tried www.gotomypc.com? I was wondering if it was worth purchasing? If not, are there any other suggestions? I'm just wanting to get into a computer every now and then to change some settings (for my father-in-law). Any suggestions?

Do a google for VNC. Take a look at Tight VNC and Real VNC. The unsecure / unencrypted version is free. The encrypted versions are reasonably priced (I think well under $100 bucks).

You install a relatively small VNC server on the PC you wish to remotely access.

Gotomypc is yet another proprietary version of VNC.

You download the client onto your remote PC and run it to gain access / control of the host PC. You will see some distortion of the screen images depending upon the amount of compression used ... overall it works very well. Just don't expect to run a graphically intense game and expect a decent frame rate!

Thanks for the reply. I'll look into it. I'm running a live scanner off of my father-in-law's computer, so I may need to occasionally get in there and make some changes. I can't just jump in the truck and ride over there, since it's about 130 miles south of me. So, I'd like to log onto his comp., change what I need to change, and all that good stuff. Thanks again!!

What about the Remote Desktop Connection on Windows XP? Does anyone know anything about it?

Default go to my pc

I signed up for the free trial. I like the service. I cancelled my paid service and they kept sending me emails for a reduced rate. Now I pay $6/month instead of the going rate of 10-20 per month.

remote desktoip works great. good compression provides quick refresh rate.
VNC tends to eat up a lot of CPU on the host computer, approx, 50%.

just things to consider:
*if the computer is behind a firewall/router, you will need to open up the port/forward ports to the correct IP address on the inside.
*make sure the host computer has remote desktop enabled... -> Computer Properties -> Remote Tab -> Allow users to connect Remotely to this computer

I use RealVNC for all my remote configuration around the house here, my stream machines don't have any monitors and just keyboards so the reboot properly incase of a power failure. The best part is you can log in via their VNC viewer or a java enabled web browser.

I played around with VNC a little bit. I tried the Windows Remote Desktop and I couldn't get it to act right.

ve3nsv if you go into the bios and set it not to halt on any errors you can do without the keyboards also.

I have also seen some little devices to emulate keyboards. Just simple dongles you plu into the keyboard port.
