Default Personal Radio Association Membership Drive

The Personal Radio Association is now accepting applications for
membership. Membership is currently free, with no dues collection,
until such time the group is incorporated and a dues schedule is
approved.

The PRA will become the primary voice of the GMRS community. Already,
PRA members have reported many FCC violations to the FCC, who is
initiating enforcement action.
PRA is the first actual GMRS membership organization. Prior to the PRA,
the Personal Radio Steering Group, which is not a membership organziation,
represented it's interests in the GMRS. In so doing, the PRSG did an excellent
job representing all of us. PRSG has long felt a membership organization would
better represent the service as a whole. PRSG remains active conducting its
own business and is playing an active role in organizing and advising the new
PRA and it's Board.

GMRS users, and users of any of the services the PRA supports
(FRS/MURS) are urged to check it out.

------------------------------------------------------------

The PRA Mission Statement

The Personal Radio Services are limited radio spectrum resources set
aside by the United States government for use by the general public as
licensed and unlicensed radio services. The PRA is a mutual-interest
organization of Federal Communications Commission licensees of the
licensed General Mobile Radio Service and interested persons using the
radio services delicensed by rule, the Multi-Use Radio Service, and
the Citizens Radio Service. The PRA's mission is to fairly and
accurately represent its member's interests in these radio services
before government agencies, the various representatives of the radio
industry, private or public organizations, and the public-at-large in
order to protect and preserve the growth, regulation, and continued
usability and effectiveness of each radio service.

The PRA Ethics Statement

The PRA supports the lawful use of the Personal Radio services as
defined in the the Federal Communications Commission's Rules and
Regulations and the various Communications Acts as amended.

The PRA supports the Basis and Purpose, as well as the Definition of
each radio service as written in the Federal Communications Commission
Rules and Regulations and remains loyal in this regard during any
deliberations before federal or private organizations.

The Personal Radio Association proactively supports and openly defends
the core interests of personal radio users before government and
private decision makers.

PRA and its members subscribe to an Operating Code of Ethics that is
consistent with the FCC’s Basis and Purpose for each radio service,
all applicable FCC Rules and Regulations, and with an emphasis toward
expected growth, continued usability and the cooperative use of each
radio service.

PRA promotes cooperation among members and non-members sharing the
same radio spectrum in the same geographical areas.

The PRA promotes a Radio Industry Code of Ethics that encourages
industry to act responsibly toward the Personal Radio Services.

-------------------------------------

PRA Focus in Brief

FCC rule making and enforcement issues with an impact on the radio
service(s)

Commercial actions toward the radio services that effect members
continued enjoyment of their investment in a negative or a positive
way.

------------------------------------
PRA Initiatives

Reporting retailers using false, misleading, or deceptive advertising
to market two-way radio, or that advertise illegal radio hardware to
the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission
respectively.

Public education regarding use of the Personal Radio Services.

GMRS Intruder reporting via PRA form through the PRA Intruder
and FCC Enforcement Committees.

Encouraging FCC enforcement of GMRS FCC Rules in problem areas of the
United States.

PRA's Reliable Retailer Program. We focus attention on retailers doing
the right thing applying the Radio Industry Code as a standard.

Keydown Focus Group. This group gathers information on illegal CB
radio keydown events and reports findings to the FCC.

The PRA is headquartered at Huntingtown, MD.

Your rude comments are uncalled for. This is a communications-related forum. There are a great many who *do* care. Some of our members first heard of our organization from this very forum "a few months back". Associations supporting communications services are common. Perhaps you have heard of the ARRL?

Just a quick question.
If YOU don't care why are you reading the thread? There are many threads here that are of no interest to me so i just don't click on them.
Question two... Seeing that this is internet and not radio just how much "bandwidth" was wasted?

The cold season is silly season. It's too cold to go outside and put up a tower or replace any cable.

It seems to me that the PRA is redundant to the FCC. If the FCC won't/can't do their job, then maybe there needs to be some changes at that level?

Exclamation Apology for posting....

We are just trying to get the word out. Since I have been a regular user of this system and a donating member, and a big fan of RadioReference in general I thought people would like to know about us. We thought some like-minded folks might be interested in what we are doing with the PRA and then come visit. As an owner of an Internet based bulletin board for ten years I also have to cope with really bad behavior on occasion. By removing ourselves everything can calm down again. I regret that the posting made at my request caused so much embarassment for us and for the good folks at RadioReference. We will not post again on the system.

The PRA was created because someone needed to lobby at the Commisison to make sure the FCC did its job. This organization is ten long years in the making. We represent GMRS licensees all over the US. Many large repeater groups have members in the PRA. It is very much needed. We have already met formally in Washington D.C. with the Chief of the Enforcement Bureau, Kris Monteith (with whom I was very impressed) and Special Counsel Riley Hollingsworth. Mr. Hollingsworth has worked over thirty enforcement cases brought to his attention by individual PRA members.

We will hopefully be meeting soon with the FCC WTB to discuss broad issues of concern.

We will leave it at that. I don't want this board to look bad because a post from us generates inappropriate responses. I think very highly of ReadioReference since I sell scanners and manage a RadioShack dealership store in Maryland. I tell all of my customers about this invaluable resource and I think some have even become members.

We're done. Sorry for an inconvenience this has caused to the owner or other members.

Does anyone know how many members the PRA is made up of? Are they a non-profit organization? Has anyone heard of, or read about, any accomplishments by the PRA?

I have a GMRS license, and use GMRS equipment. Other than here on RR, and the PRA web site, I've never heard of this organization. Who here on RR is a member of PRA? I'd be interested in your comments.

Thanks!

I am. The Association is new, but likewise, anything new has potential. Personally, I felt that anyone who is doing something to better a radio service has my vote. Somebody is doing something and I want to be a part of that. They have been successful in getting some long overdue enforcement action in parts of the country and are working for some valid rule changes that need to be done. You want to protect your investment, give the PRA a shot. Its better than sitting back and doing nothing.

It is non-profit. They're not even collecting dues yet! The membership is into the hundreds last time I heard.

People have been complaining about the FCC since it's inception in 1934. Yeah... Sure! Change in a Federal Bureaucracy because of individually expressed concern? (Hysterical laughter) As was stated, the ARRL (who has its own detractors), collectively has more influence from member numbers rather any of us sending in our thoughts and receiving a digitally signed form letter from Uncle Charlie's Headquarters in Pennsylvania before being mounted in the lobby fireplace.

I can't find any reference of these accomplishments on their web site. I would think they would be noted, or linked to related news stories, or rule changes that they influenced? No mention anywhere on the web.
