Are you using Windows? If so, press your print screen button, then open Paint (Start > Programs > Accessories > Paint), and click Edit > Paste to paste the screenshot into Paint. And don't forget to save it.

The Print Screen key works well for full screen shots; however, if you ever find the need to capture a smaller area, such as a window, or just a small area in about any shape you can imagine, try Capture Express. After you capture, you can save the image to some of the standard graphics file formats, or directly to the clipboard. Works well and is easy to use! It's a good bargain at $15 for the license.

...Or if for a single window, just press Alt + Print Screen. That captures only the active window.
