I thought I would post this since it is something of intrest to me.
I read an article in the Toronto Star this week about the amendments they are making to the act. (Hasnt been updated since the 60's).
http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/Con...=1100645411060
I was wondering if they are going to mandate "bouncers" and such, if this would apply to the "in house" security people (for example Security Officers at Canada's Wonderland or floor walkers for Sears and Walmart)?
I know that the "Park Patrol" officers at Wonderland carry the ASP baton, which they are trained to use along with handcuffs etc etc... While companies like Intercon carry the PR24 and Intelliguard carries the Straight Stick Baton. I've seen Emerald Security officers carry ASPs. ( I didnt think it was legal for "security Guards" to carry the ASP)
In response to the article I have to agree that the industry MUST be regulated and have strict guidelines. I work in this industry and I've seen too many "Yahoos" and people who should not be in the industry, AT ALL. I've been infront of some of these "mock cop" cars and they seem to think they are cops, and think that they are invincible. WRONG. Mind you there are many many many good and outstanding professionals in the industry who do their job well.
I guess it all boils down to training, and making sure that the general public is informed to exactly what security guards are legally allowed to do. I personally think that the companies who have those "special" uniforms are quite frankly trying too hard. (just do a google search for private security in Toronto and you'll know what I mean)
I might be straying off topic a little bit, so I'll stop here. I just want to get any one else's experiences and such, or even their two cents on the whole deal.
Also PM me if you want links to the websites that I have RE: Private security, I have a few good ones
