I've been playing more of keyboards since I was 6, but have been playing rythym guitar as well. If you're just starting to get the feel for an electric, the Fender Starcaster kit ($200 for guitar, amp, cable, and cloth case) is a good buy. The amp may be small, but has superb overdrive to rival Hendrix. I have been running the guitar through the amp, then out from the headphone jack through an impedance matcher, then on to a digital effects rack, then on to the big 100W per channel stereo amp. There goes the neighborhood!!
I also have a Hammond M-3, Yamaha DX-7, and Casio Midi keyboard.
Good luck.

If you can afford any Gibson or an American Strat, take a look at G&L. It'll be the same amount of money, you get the looks and playability of a Fender with the tone of a Gibson.
I've had a 1981 L-2000E series bass for almost 10 years now. One of the first ever made by G&L. Finest instrument I've ever played in my life. People have literally handed me $1000 in cash to buy it from me. I'll go to the grave with this thing.
Oh, they're all 100% handmade too. Machines do the work, but human hands control the output.

G&Ls are nice, but I make my own guitars. And sometimes, sell them. I'll match my best
instruments head-to-head with anything to come out of PRS or the Gibson Custom Shop.
Looks and playability are very "personal taste" oriented. I never thought much of Fenders
in either regard. I prefer the Gibson school of guitar design in EVERY respect.

And I don't do kits! I buy raw lumber. The rest is a lot of work, the sort that
takes pride, skill, and a great deal of care and attention to detail.

Nice work Elroy - they look pretty good - how do they play?

Any that don't play well met the bandsaw before I took photos of them. Playability is more important than looks and that's always my PRIMARY focus. A good looking guitar that
doesn't play well will ruin a builder's reputation, while the new owner of a guitar that
plays great but doesn't look all that good will still praise its playability.

esp
im looking strongly at esp mainly because both guitars for metallica, james and kirk both play the esp's and i have not come across a metallica track that has not had great guitar sound in it, but i still dont know. like the strats but i have a fender acouistic and it has not been that great so i dont really know about fender, i have a 100 dollar "esteban" guitar that was given to me as a gift that sounds and plays better in my opinion

I usually go to a decent music store and try out some guitars. Some just feel right or get closer to the sound you're looking for. My latest guitar is an Ibanez. They're good guitars for the money. I've had some Fenders with mixed results. Of course with Fender, you can go from low buck Squires to top of the line American made special editions. Everyone knows you're paying for the name. I had a Gibson SG, too, for the mystique of it. But it didn't really "mesh" with me. I've sounded better and had a better time with less known brand names for less money.
You just have to try before you buy. You'll know when it's the right one. It's usually the one for about $200+ more than you wanted to spend.

I've been playing guitar for 26 years, if you plan on playing guitar for years to come, don't buy something cheap. Spend a couple of extra dollars and you'll be happy in the long run...and when you're on stage !!! Check your local music shop, they may have a rental program and you can take something home for a few weeks to try out.
Elroy, nice work on those guitars !

This is the truth. I had an old Ibanez Roadstar II that I bolted some Seymour Duncans on and it screamed. I think I paid more for the pickups than the guitar itself haha.

Been at it for about 30years now, don't chez out, you will not be happy. With that said you can't go wrong with a good Strat or nice Gibson Hollow Body, depending on the sound you want.
Good advice from above, go to the store and take a few for a test drive. Nothing wrong with going second hand gear either!
Congrats on the 5 year mark, you most likely will now have a life time hobby. Get in a band and have some fun. I did the band thing for about 10 years, I then had kids and gave it up.
