<<Memphis was as busy as NYPD/FDNY.>>

On a Friday or Saturday the Memphis system handles over 55,000 conversations on 110,000-120,000 PTT's.

Are you using any software with your 396? For example, the Uniden software or Butel Arc396?

Try this. Note, selector is the knob on the top of the scanner. It doubles as a knob to scroll through the menus and a selector, where you push it down to select.

1. While the scanner is on, press the menu on the side of the scanner.
2. Press the selector down to choose Program System.
3. Scroll until you find New System.
4. Press the selector down to select New System.
5. Scroll down to MOT and press the selector down.
6. Choose 800MHz Standard and press the selector down.
7. Press E (yes) to confirm.
8. Scroll down to Set Frequencies and press the selector down.
9. Press the selector to enter new frequency.
10. Enter 854.53750 and press the selector down.
11. Press scan.

Then you should hear traffic. You can then edit the system name, enter groups and talk group ID's. For example, you can have a group called Police and enter all the talk group ID's for the police. See here for all the talk groups:

Memphis/Shelby County Public Safety Trunking System, Memphis, Tennessee - Scanner Frequencies

You will also want to add the alternate control channels (854.58750, 854.63750, 859.46250). The above steps will get you listening as quickly as possible.

PM me if you need more info.

To put it in a visual perspective, here is a video clip of Unitrunker monitoring the Memphis system a few years ago.

Are all the talkgroups/users on this system now digital?

When they rebanded recently I reprogrammed my 996XT's but was only picking up buzzing on the TG's, except for one of the SO TG's. I found that I had the audio on that one set to "all" and the ones I couldn't hear were set to analog only. I changed the other setting to "all" and cleared it up.

Before they rebanded I thought everything was analog.

None of the public safety TGs have been analog. Not 100% sure I understand.

The last time I was through there, which was October of 2010 I thought most of the TG's were analog.

The bc355c is not capable of picking up the Memphis/Shelby County system. you will need a digital scanner such as the Uniden 396/996, the GRE PSR 500/600, or the Radio Shack Pro96.

The Uniden 396, GRE PSR 500 and RadioShack Pro 96 are all handheld portable scanners. Nothing is needed for installation in a vehicle for these unless you want an external antenna or power supply.

The other models (996, 600 & RadioShack Pro 2096) are all mobile versions of the above scanners, meaning they are made for sitting on a desk, or mounting in a vehicle. They come with brackets and power leads to mount in a vehicle, but do not come with an external antenna.

According to moto, Dyersburg is the only p25 system in West Tennessee.

Most of public safety in shelby co and memphis is P16 digital. There are no immediate plans to upgrade.

Sources tell me that several of the burbs are looking to upgrade.

How far out does the Memphis system usually reach? I wonder if I should be able to hear it in Kennett MO.
