Talking Man Sentenced 10 Years Tdc For Evading Arrest

Man sentenced

A 14-minute, high-speed chase on Sept. 10, 2008 resulted in Brandon Marcus Turner, 24, of Seadrift being sentenced to 10 years in the Texas Department of Corrections.

Turner was charged with evading arrest or detention using a vehicle on Sept. 10.

District Attorney Dan Heard said the offense of evading arrest with a motor vehicle is a state jail felony that has a punishment range between six months to two years in a state jail facility.

“Since Turner had prior state jail felony convictions, the punishment range was increased to a minimum of two years in state prison to a maximum of 10 years in a state prison,” Heard said.

Heard added that he appreciated the good work of law enforcement in arresting Turner that led to the DA office being able to secure the maximum prison sentence possible for the offense.

He was arrested by Port Lavaca police officers following a chase circling the city from 3:50 a.m. on Cheeves Street on Sept. 10 and ending on Leon Street. The chase circled the city several times.

Police Chief John Stewart said at the time, that after the chase began the police officers recognized the vehicle as possibly being involved in an earlier burglary.

At about 3:08 a.m. Sept. 10, Sgt. Colin Rangnow was called to a burglar alarm at El Patio Restaurant on Main Street. As he was arriving at the scene he saw a silver colored Mercury leaving the area. He found a rear door to the restaurant pried open.

At 3:50 a.m. when officers responded to China Inn on an alarm call, Chief Stewart said, Rangnow responded again and saw a Silver Mercury Cougar parked across the fence north of the business area on Holiday Lane.

“As he approached the vehicle he observed the license number and called it in.” Stewart said in his news release. “The vehicle started up and accelerated rapidly away.

Within seconds Officer Kevin Wilkins observed the vehicle and went in pursuit. The vehicle ran north on FM 1090, made a u-turn and came back into the city. Officers pursued it through Port Lavaca for 14 minutes often at high speeds until it ran into a tree on 2001 Leon.

Turner ran on foot until he was apprehended by the lawmen.

Stolen property in the car linked to burglaries at El Patio, Mexico Tipico, China Inn, Luanne’s Hair Style, Untamed Hair and Sandra’s Creations.
