Default What type of scanner should I get for (south of Dalals) Cedar Hill, Duncanville...

I'm very interested in hearing the PD's in my area. They are on NEXEDGE.

I'm very fluent in Linux and have no problem using / installing DSD software. I also have no problem installing a discriminator.

So here's the scoop. I'm trying to get my sons interested in the hobby of scanning and we just want to try to get what we basically need.

I know the PD here has gone digital using NEXEDGE, and I assume we'll need a trunk scanner because there is a control channel.

My question is does the DSD software enable us to get by with a standard non digital trunking scanner so that we can just use a linux box to listen? (of course we don't know if the signal is encrypted)

Just curious if I need digital trunk or standard trunk if using the software.
All advice appreciated.
Thanks

There are no NEXEDGE scanners at this time.

Using DSD would work but you must steer the radio to follow conversations with some other software. For more details you might try asking the experts in the Trunk Decoder forum or the Digital Voice forum.
