I put together most of this. I'm pretty familiar with the operations out there so let me know if you have questions. Most of the air operations that Randolph deals with is Instructor Pilot training - which is basically "train the trainer" operations. There is also an IFF (introduction to fighter fundamentals) course there as well that uses the T-38s.

Thanks I was using your information and what airnav.com was showing for Randolph. My dad use to work out at Randolph back in the 80s. I grew up around Air Force air planes.

Some further color.

The T-1s and T-38s at Randolph are for teaching instructor pilots how to instruct students for advanced pilot training. The T-1 is for the bomber, tanker, and cargo/pax advanced traning, the T-38 is for fighter advanced pilot training.

The T-6s are for basic pilot training and those instructors also learn at Randolph.

Randolph used to have the 737s that were used for Navigator training (callsigns GATOR... get it, naviGATOR ) but those have since relocated to, I believe Pensacola FL. It was a multi-service mission so that explains USN involvement.

You will also hear multi-national training occurring at Randolph - squadrons will host IP students from multiple nationalities.

Thanks for the info. One more question. What are the Houston Centor frequencies for? I thought that when a plane leaves the area of Randolph they talk to San Antonio. I would ask my dad but he died in 1991.

Tonight Randolph's departure frequency was 318.10000 SAT App/Dep (091-140).

Houston Center is an ARTCC...or enroute control center. Once an airplane leaves the airspace around an airport, they go to departure for that TCA...but not long before they arrive at cruising altitude, they are handed off to the CENTER who follows them and directs them thru the airspace at high altitudes between airport and terminal control areas....

Houston Center covers a very large area...most of S. TX and then some...now if that flight is headed north they will be handled by Houston ARTCC until about the airspace around Austin, then handed off to Dallas Center! Going northwest they eventually are handled by Albuquerque Center. Actually digging around the internet and seeing the coverage areas of the centers is pretty interesting.
