So I've had my Tech ticket for almost a year now and have worked 2 meter and 70 cms. They're both great when you have a radio that works lol. The control harness on my Moto Maratrac melted so I'm out of a radio for 2 meters and have a 10 meter rig sitting here. What's the activity like on there and any rules, regs or things I should be aware of?? How does a 9 ft whip perform on 10 meter?? Answers would be greatly appreciated as I am clueless.

You can see what your 10 meter privileges are here:

http://www.arrl.org/files/file/Hambands_color.pdf

You're limited to 200 watts on 10 meters, data and cw from 28.0 to 28.3, and SSB from 28.3 to 28.5. There's a LOT of SSB activity on 28.4, on upper sideband, and it's a pretty friendly crowd. A 9 foot whip is a bit on the long side, but it would probably work ok with a somewhat elevated SWR.

Listen in on 28.4, and see what you hear.

Anyone from Pennsylvania that can say much??

I'm debating whether to go ahead with the 10 meter too or not. If it's worth cramming into the vehicle lol. Space is kind of limited.

A friend of mine was a tech, and the only HF voice privileges was that little bit of 10m Sideband. He had a great time, almost daily making contacts while mobile in his truck from here in IL down to Florida and Texas. He got so hooked on that kind of communicating, he upgraded to general and has not taken his FT857 off of 20m!
I had a 10m FM mobile once. FM is not quite as active, but I still had a lot of fun when the band opened on FM. This was only a year ago too, and the sun spots were low. As soon as 24 picks up more, I will probably get another 10m FM (Im not much for anything ssb)

Just remember, As a tech, you cannot use 10m FM. ONLY ssb and cw/data. I made the mistake once thinking that I had 10m privleges throughout the entire 10m band! oops...
I when to get my general, and now I do have the entire band!

What kind of 10m radio do you have??

I have a Radio Shack HTX-10 25 watt 10 meter rig that is putting out 25 watts and since I put it in my car I have made over (70) contacts on 10 meters using a old k-40 CB antenna cut down to 10 meters. When I am out in the car I leave the rig setting on 28.400 USB and when I hear activity I know the band is open.I work 28.3 to 28.5 USB.You are correct on the 29Mhz 10 meter FM Repeaters on 29.6, 29.62, 29.64, 29.66, My license will not allow my to operate in this portion on 10 FM but I do listen.Working on getting a upgrade to General.

10 Meters

I have been hearing a 10 meter FM repeater on my scanner from New York
You can get the callsign if you listen
It is on 29.620 FM PL 114.8 , May need to verify PL tone
I heard some local traffic on the repeater from Alabama but do not have a way to transmit
It is very strong at times , I have not monitored SSB for traffic lately but I believe FM is working
ok at times
You will need at least a General Class license for 10 M FM to transmit
or a scanner or radio just to listen
SSB traffic is not very good at the moment , so I have been told

The Repeater that you are talking about is a series of linked repeaters. I believe the main one is in New York City and is running 1KW I believe. I hear it all the time here at my location, but the unfortunate thing is you can listen but can't ever get into the darn thing.....

You have me wondering... What's to listen to if no one can get into it?

I think you guys are talking about KQ2H. He has an extensive system in the New York area of 10, 1.25, and 70cm repeaters.

You are at the mercy of propagation. When 10m is open, Florida and other states in the SE come inot this system, as well as N2ACF in Nyack like they are next door.

Steven, I don't have a rig anymore, but am looking at getting another one. I was just interested to see if it's worth getting one again. Never powered it up, installed it in my '99 Jeep Cherokee and totalled it the next day. Gotta love it!

Heres something I thought of the other day while listening to 10 meter FM..
The channel assignments are just the same as they were at least 40 years ago!
Since then theres been a CB craze with many models available for conversion. There has been a "ten meter radio" craze with manufacturers offering affordable FM capable radios. And the FCC has changed the band plan a little by allowing voice operation below 28.5 mhz.

It seems to me with all this activity (not to mention the sunspot cycle starting to come into play) that fm simplex and repeater operators have good arguments for an increase in assigned FM repeater and simplex channels!

10 meter FM is bound to get more congested as the sunspot cycle increases its activity. I think a re-assignment and increase in available FM channels is a good thing!

That 29.620 W1OJ repeater outside of Boston is a dynamite station...
used to be able to work it with an RCI-2950 in my dumptruck in Cent. Tex.
