11-58 probably means two dozen things in different parts of the country. You should really post this in the Minnesota forum ot get the correct answer.

hmm lots of generic police codes say that 11-58 is radio being monitored use phone

Well, one would assume that someone is listening in or they would have said it over the radio, i know here they just say "give me a landline"

or even using the old generic 10 codes 10-21 would mean call.... Now they just say call dispatch... or if it is a supervisor in the office he will say call me at 222 (or whatever) with the xxx-x being common for the pd so they know its xxx-x222. Sometimes you might hear them say give me a call on my cell and sometimes you will even hear them give their cell numbers over the air.

...And we don't use 11 codes in Alabama and 11-58 meant teletype was in use for the CHP. Post this kind of thing in the appropriate state forum and stop these needless and non-enlightening threads here.

I'm pretty sure they don't 'know' someone is listening, but around here it's pretty much guaranteed that someone with a scanner is listening 24/7 since everyone and their mom has a scanner in these parts. We don't use 11-58, or any 11 codes for that matter but it's just better safe than sorry to just use the phone for stuff we don't want John Q Public to hear.

Out here in Connecticut, the State Police have a similar code, "Code B". It is said, "Troop A to 1232, Code B?" "1232 Roger". Dispatch then proceeds with sensitive information such as a valid warrant, suspended license or similar. This allows the trooper the advantage of not having such info broadcast right in front of the subject, who may respond negatively, even violently.

Casually, many of us use Code B to mean "on the DL" or on the sly.

Excuse me if I insult anyone but . . . . . . . (DUH) Where it is used that way, it is for the officer in the field to tell the dispatcher or other unit to call him by phone because the subject or other "interested party" is within earshot of his radio.

In the small city of Mechanicville (1 sq mile area btw) the Mechanicville Police Department uses dispatch on 155.490 to relay any info. They always say the info on there, warrants, registration, and always the DMV records which is kinda fun to hear if you know anyone who got pulled over.

Well actually the city of Talladega did use some "11" codes years ago... :)
