I'm using alkaline AA's in my Pro 95. Since I listen often, I'm burning up batteries pretty quickly. I've used rechargables in the past, and they took hours to fully charge. I see Radio Shack and Rayovac sell 15 minute rechargables in AA and AAA. You need a special charger. It's pretty expensive, like $39 for two AA's and the charger, with another 2 AA's for $15 more. Anyone been using these? Are they worth it? Thanks.

In general;

1) The faster you recharge a NiCd, or NiMH batery, the more you heat it the shorter it lasts.

2) Overcharging, even at low rates also shortens battery life span.

I would buy good batteries, and a good charger.
I would use more than one set to allow a fairly slow charge without having to use partially charged bateriesn or over dis-charge the batteries.
I would not let a battery sit in the charger longer than neccessary (not as much of a concern with a good charger).

Have fun.

While it may take 60-90 minutes, not 15, I would recommend the MAHA charger. You can use regular NiMH cells (4 for less than $10 at Target for 2300 mAH cells).

You can get the charger and four 2200 mAH cells for $26.

I like the rapid charge from RS

I'm using the rapid-charge AA's from AA (for a pro-95). I find the 15 minute charge gives me 3-4 days of intermittent scanner usage. The fast charge is a very nice benefit.

That said, the other advise is good too. Buy 8 NiMH batteries (at least 2000 mAH) with a good charging system and rotate batteries.

Definitely NiMH. If the scanner/charger is smart enough not to overcharge them, they'll last a good while. I've had the same set in my Pro-94 for two years now...they'll still last a weekend.

If however, the charger is old and not smart enough not to overcharge, Ni-Cad's fare better when left actively charging (trickle), and will actually lose their charge if left laying around unused outside a charger or in a scanner.

with apologies....

back in july i stumbled across some 2300 mah nimh (everyready)rechargeables at wal mart.... power my pro 96 with them--the thing stays on about 12 hours a day, haven't gone dry since changing to these bats...

they came in a four pack and charge nicely in a one-hour charger i bought (it was a package deal, four 2200 mah nimh bats and the one hour charger, brand name digital for about ten bucks at the time) in the camera department at wally world....

worth the price in savings on alkaline double-a's....

hey,

I use a PRO-93 almost every second of my life, and at Best Buy, i found a REALLY good rechargeble battery system. They are called MONSTER RECHARGEBLES. Takes 2 hours to charge, probably 15-16 hour continuos life. These figures are probably not exact, but you wont be dissapointed! Also the charger has fold away prongs for travel use. I think it was 30 bucks.
