Was on Hwy 14 near Acton yesterday when I started picking up traffic (mostly dispatching) on 151.130 C151.4, I've gone through the database here and the CalFire book but can't find a match to that freq and tone. The closest is 151.130 CSQ RRU3 East Dispatch, I also noticed the FCC is showing several repeater sites in Ventura County that have been recently licensed (within the past few months) which aren't in any books or databases.

After exiting Hwy 14 at Newhall Avenue I started receiving weak traffic on 155.160 C165.5, it was mostly static but a female voice would break through now and then talking about trails and canyons. Again, I've scoured through the database here and I checked Google, cant find any info.

Do either of these freq/tone pairs look familiar to anyone?

151.13 is Ventura Co Sheriff West County Dispatch.... 155.16 may be Santa Monica Parks Conservancy Rangers....

155.16 is the National Search & Rescue Common, called NASAR or NATSAR for short. The woman you were hearing was referring to trails and canyons because they must have been involved in an active wilderness SAR mission, or a training scenario. The 165.5 CTCSS tone doesn't ring a bell though.

It's interesting that frequency/tone combination is also used by the ambulance company in Orange county. Ambulance company licenses are grandfathered in on 155.16 despite the nationwide importance of this frequency, but I believe many have vacated it to avoid having to share the freq. However an ambulance company would not be referring to trails and canyons - but SAR teams would.

Don't know why I didn't think of Ventura County Sheriff, its been in my radio for two years! I cant get it here in Newhall but if I go north from where my antenna is aligned with the 126 that 151.130 comes in full scale.

As for 155.160, I thought that ambulance company was forced off of there a few years ago due to interference issues? I know for a while they were getting into the Angeles NF radio system due to a link issue.

I get ambulance service 25 miles away in my area. I am with you...it should be used for SAR.

165.5 is indeed the EAS ambulance service from OC.
Until last year they had a different PL, but they have been on 155.160 for quite some time.

While 155.16 is often thought of as being the nationwide SAR frequency, there is no official designation by the FCC. Ambulances and other PS eligibles can use the frequency.

Thanks for the correction! There are a lot of county-level licenses for it (for various sheriff SAR teams), but not every county has one. I know of at least one county that had a Sheriff SAR license for it while AMR was also licensed and used it for dispatch in the same coverage area (their license is still active though I haven't heard them on it in a year or so).

It's interesting that he heard the tone belonging to the OC ambulance company, but then heard references to canyons and trails (not many private ambulances do wilderness extrication). It would be very unfortunate if an LA county SAR team chose the same PL tone as the OC ambulance company!
