Seems like that label would be pretty fitting in this case. He would have a much more effective "chase" vehicle by using a standard SUV which would keep him from having to screw his radios, amps, whatever to the prisoner partition that I'm sure he gets a lot of use out of... I cannot think of a reason he would need anything "heavier duty" than a Blazer, Explorer, Grand Cherokee, etc which can all be had for the same money.

I wouldn't consider him a whacker. He got a vehicle that he apparently likes and suited his needs. He outfitted his vehicle, using and adapting the existing hardware to his hobby, profession (not sure if they get paid / compensated or not for storm spotting) and volunteer work.

I do like his set up but wouldn't want to ride in the back seat. :D If you only had an idea of who and what goes in the back seats of police cars.

Don't let anyone sway you or tell you what to do.

Great install!

Not going to waste my time on the whacker comment but I will ask you this. What makes you think I don't have an SUV chase vehicle? Have you seen gas prices lately? When you drive 8-900 miles in a day, I'll drive a car; a heavy duty car at that.

Never do ;) Thanks Keith!

Thanks. Yea having a firefighter tag kind of ruins the whole 'whacker' idea, I'm not trying to look like a cop. I like impala's, good gas mileage, end of story. I do get paid for chasing in northeastern KS.

Only remaining 'police' cage is the roll style bar with that half side of plexi-glass. The seat has been replaced, sometimes I sleep back there on a long chase, but mainly used for storage.

** Sorry for the late response on these below, forums had some issues hence my two blank posts before.

How is the performance of your GTX? What type of coax are you using on that radio to the antenna?

Not terrible, I'm sure you know the higher frequencies are pretty well line of sight. It works well for direct communication with my chase partner around a storm if he's not with me.

Nice job, but why did you cowl mount antennas in the front when you had the roof available? Just curious because I've never seen antennas mounted on the cowl of a impala before.

Well what's left of that 'cage' is a pain in the rear to drop and I'd need to drop the headliner a bit to get to the roof. The front antennae have since been removed and before too long an antenna will go in the roof for the spectra.

Yea, my thoughts exactly, didn't think anyone else would pick that up. Either roof mount or just trunk lip mount.

Yea I didn't think it looked too bad at first, then the look grew on me. They're gone :p

I just thought it was a northerner "thing." :D Most normal people down my way put the two way radio antennas on the roof or on the back part of their vehicles. The only exception is the AM / FM antennas and the antenna(s)s mounted on the mirror(s) of the larger pick ups pulling trailers. Heck when I do see one mounted like that the OCD comes out and I get a strong urge to "fix it." Probably the only thing holding me back is a damage to property charge and arrest. :D

Seriously though it is a nice setup (other than the antennas mounted on the front) and I wish I had the funds to spend on equipment like that. :)

Thank you! Most of it has been acquired over a LONG period.

AHHHHHHH!!!

Im jealous, Hey wait, You stole my dream car LOL..

Anyway, Truly a nice vehicle/setup you have!

Lol thanks. I love it so far, go get one!

Quite an impressive setup! Thanks for making the video...it sure brings it all together!

Russell

Thanks! There's a lot to cover for sure..

Awesome setup! You gave me some ideas for my antennas on my 2010 Impala.

It's sad when you have to put a disclaimer on your posts, yet still have S.A.P's stalk the forums for any Crown Vic, Impala, or Charger setups and tell you that you should get something else...

Thanks! Yea it is, those who don't know the whole story are the one's who get pissy and make posts like above. Life goes on!

A Fail Wheel Drive Chevy is more durable than a RWD body on frame design that's been so successful it hasn't had a major update since 1992?

What you lose in MPG (I usually get ~20 in my CV), you gain in quality, reliability, dependability, and crash survivability.

This is what happens in high speed Impala crashes (Fatality, not that I needed to say anything)

The officer survived this crash....

Because every crash is the same, right? I'll be fine in my Impala. Not sure why people even think it's an issue, the car is purchased already. Crown vics used to be a death trap if hit from behind, no car is perfect!

Your car came out great man! Maybe one day ill see you driving around manhattan even though I dont go up there much. If I do happen to see you, youll have to give me a tour of the whole thing haha. I am also with you when you say no car is perfect. I have a CVPI and love it while I also love the impala's. I had just found my vic first before an impala. They are both great cars just perform different and look different!

Thanks! Yea look me up if you're ever up in this area. I don't mind CVPI's but I wouldn't have one as a daily driver, I just prefer Impala's. Don't get me wrong, a CVPI is a workhorse and has been proven time and time again. But comparing an older body style Impala high speed VS a tree; to a CVPI rollover isn't exactly apples to apples. I've cut people out of a vast variety of cars from accidents they shouldn't have walked away from, every accident and every car is different; even the same model. Impala's are proven cars too, CVPI's and Impala's are both great, I just prefer an Impala for my daily car :p

I agree with you! I have been looking for an impala to switch into so I can save some money on gas but havent found any good ones so far. Also, both these cars are used by police for a reason. Yes the crown vic's are more in demand by agencies but impala's are used as well because they are reliable and a great car as well.

Yep. I like mine, a lot. It's a tough car, gets good mileage on the highway and works great for my application.

For those pulling the 'whacker' card, go right ahead ;)

It's just one of the Chinese one's on eBay. Do a search for 'car dvr' and you'll get TONS of results. My chase partner, W6UDF, purchased a newer one that has gps and dual cameras. I'll be upgrading to that one soon :p

can you provide a link for us?

This is what I just purchased, seems to be working good thus far.
2.7" LCD 140° View Angle Dual Lens Car DVR Video Recorder + GPS Logger X3000 | eBay

Brilliant use of the partition in the car.

;)

Thanks! It's there and more than strong enough to use for it's purpose, works great.

They can play the "wacker" card if they want to, but it's guys like you and me that will pull them out of a sticky situtation when the smelly stuff hits the ventilation device; I'm in the Emergency Communications and weather spotting stuff, and I could care less whtat my trucks look like, as long as they are safe to drive.

Yea, well fact of the matter is I'm an actual emergency responder so whacker or not, I respond. Whatever floats the boat I suppose!

The Impala's were redesigned in 2006 and that photo is a definitely 2000-2005 model. Just saying...
