The World Boxing Championships will be held at the UIC Pavilion from October
23-November 3. With nearly 700 top athletes from 120 countries scheduled to
compete, this will be one of the largest and most important international sporting
events that Chicago has ever hosted. This is an Olympic qualifying event for the
Beijing 2008 Summer Games. UIC has a unique opportunity to demonstrate our
hospitality to these world-class athletes as they train and compete on our campus.

SecondCityCop reports shutdown of three units in CPD in order to provide security.

As a UIC student and scannist, I guess it should be interesting.

Immediate observations (Thursday, 10/18 & Friday, 10/19):
- The south side of Roosevelt street, from Halsted to Morgan, parking was completely prohibited. This is the location of the Phys-Ed Building (PEB) and it's lined with 2 hour maximum parking meters; each meter had an orange no parking sign.

- Same street, coach busses were parked (I think the company was Midwest Motorcoach), and unmarked Crown Vics basically infiltrated the area. Some were I'm guessing detectives (regular plates, red/blue revolving light on dash, no rear windshield lightbar, but individual lights) and others were Tac units (green M plates). No one appeared to be wearing plain clothes (those that were in vehicles). There was a Tac unit right in the middle of the street where you can cross from the north to south side of Roosevelt (midway between Halsted & Morgan, leading to the entrance of the PEB) who were on shift rotations.

- Traffic Aides were out in full force, even at Roosevelt & Morgan (which is a pretty small intersection, and there's very little traffic on Morgan). There's been a lot of cleanup going on in the median that parts Roosevelt. The median is a tall & wide one with plants & flowers in it.

- Haven't been able to do any CloseCalling/SignalStalking as all my observations were just me parking my car and walking to class (which are all north of Roosevelt). Quick listens of Dispatch Zone 4 (001/018) while walking to class didn't really reveal any information; probably on some City-wide channel or something else. Haven't done any serious scanner listening 'cause I'm usually right-on-time when I get to school and leave as soon as my classes are done.

As a UIC student, I get to go for free the first week (Tuesday thru Saturday); don't know if they'll let me in with my radio though.

When I get some free-time I'll try to do some serious scanning.

Scanning near downtown Chicago is practically impossible! Too many Stalker hits! I doubt I have time to sort out the legit traffic I'm interested in. The whole 450-470 MHz range is crowded with users.

Looks like Citywide 5 is being used for the event (or at least outside of the actual venue). Hearing mainly arrival & departure announcements to the "training center" (Physical Education Building) and the Pavilion. Some were hotel departures (Palmer House) as well. I'm not sure if the officers are using their unit IDs or if the boxers have some special ID and officers are escorting them. The IDs aren't 4 digits and one of 'em was "4", which according to CARMA is "First Deputy Superintendent", so I would guess the former.

10/29/2007 Edit: seems these are bus numbers. "Bus 4, leaving the Palmer House"

Think I've identified another communications channel:
TG 0-03-060 on the ESP Wireless Chicago #1 LTR system.

Heard comms relating to bringing boxing gloves over to the Pavilion.

Edit #1: Sounds like a filming crew, however I've heard congestion with parking lots and garages mentioned. Might be an all-around event channel or something.
Unit IDs heard:
"Event 1"
"Event 2"
"Mach"?
"Hotel 71"

Boxing doesn't start 'til 2PM so post-2PM might be a good time to listen in on.

"Site" channel?

Heard traffic on TG 06-030 again this afternoon - one unit said something like "switching over to site". Perhaps there is an on-site repeater they are using for activities around and about the UIC facilities being used for the World Boxing Championship?

You've got your work cut out for you, wannabescannist.....

Yeah, nice little scanning project to test my research capabilities. I ran some CloseCall'ing on my 396T but didn't really yield much: 175.3MHz and 455.8MHz. 175.3MHz was just a buzzing sound (like tuning a radio to the video subcarrier of a TV channel) but where-ever it came from, was definitely from the area. Wireless mic perhaps? Or maybe it was video...

455.8MHz, I'm guessing was just strong interference or media.

I was in the car (no external antenna), so that could've made the job harder, but it isn't that easy walking around with a 396T and trying to look "normal" in an area full of cops.

Edit: lol, 175.3MHz falls within TV Broadcast channel 7 (ABC), guess I need to memorize the TV band limits.

Midwest Motorcoach (Owned by Olson Transportation) is based out of Gurnee, IL. They use Nextel DC for comm's, so don't bother searching for them. Some busses have CB's, but..... that's almost pointless to search for.

CB...pointless? Since when??!!

The finals are tomorrow (11/3/07), so that'll be the last of my investigations...and will finally be able to park on the street without stalking someone who looks like they're walking to their car and is about to leave!
