The World Boxing Championships will be held at the UIC Pavilion from October
23-November 3. With nearly 700 top athletes from 120 countries scheduled to
compete, this will be one of the largest and most important international sporting
events that Chicago has ever hosted. This is an Olympic qualifying event for the
Beijing 2008 Summer Games. UIC has a unique opportunity to demonstrate our
hospitality to these world-class athletes as they train and compete on our campus.
SecondCityCop reports shutdown of three units in CPD in order to provide security.
As a UIC student and scannist, I guess it should be interesting.
Immediate observations (Thursday, 10/18 & Friday, 10/19):
- The south side of Roosevelt street, from Halsted to Morgan, parking was completely prohibited. This is the location of the Phys-Ed Building (PEB) and it's lined with 2 hour maximum parking meters; each meter had an orange no parking sign.
- Same street, coach busses were parked (I think the company was Midwest Motorcoach), and unmarked Crown Vics basically infiltrated the area. Some were I'm guessing detectives (regular plates, red/blue revolving light on dash, no rear windshield lightbar, but individual lights) and others were Tac units (green M plates). No one appeared to be wearing plain clothes (those that were in vehicles). There was a Tac unit right in the middle of the street where you can cross from the north to south side of Roosevelt (midway between Halsted & Morgan, leading to the entrance of the PEB) who were on shift rotations.
- Traffic Aides were out in full force, even at Roosevelt & Morgan (which is a pretty small intersection, and there's very little traffic on Morgan). There's been a lot of cleanup going on in the median that parts Roosevelt. The median is a tall & wide one with plants & flowers in it.
- Haven't been able to do any CloseCalling/SignalStalking as all my observations were just me parking my car and walking to class (which are all north of Roosevelt). Quick listens of Dispatch Zone 4 (001/018) while walking to class didn't really reveal any information; probably on some City-wide channel or something else. Haven't done any serious scanner listening 'cause I'm usually right-on-time when I get to school and leave as soon as my classes are done.
As a UIC student, I get to go for free the first week (Tuesday thru Saturday); don't know if they'll let me in with my radio though.
When I get some free-time I'll try to do some serious scanning.
