Picked up a 2016 FPIU. It was formerly an AZ State Trooper ghost car used primarily for commercial vehicle enforcement. I currently have 2 XPR 5550 (vhf/uhf) sitting in a brand new jotto console with plans for a convertacom for my APX8000. The antenna is a panorama sharkee antenna which came with the vehicle. I live in a very remote part of nothern Arizona so pardon the dust.

I've been assigned plenty of fifth and sixth generation Explorers but the fifth is by far my favorite. Especially the 2015-2019 style

Its a nice ride. I was a dealer of police vehicles in phoenix for about 4 years and the 2016-19 is my favorite body style. The 13-15 i think has an ugly face. Overall the explorers are really nice for cruising and road trips. This one haa 205k on it.

A nearby municipality is switching to all hybrids. They have a few so far. I did ride with a local PD in a 2020 explorer, had 17k on it and the valves were chattering like crazy. I couldnt believe how junky it felt. The interior is much better designed than the earlier models though. Although it does feel a bit more cramped.

Are the engines in those hybrids running the Otto cycle or Atkinson cycle? My wife had a 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid, and the 4 cylinder in it used the Atkinson cycle. Sounded a bit different and took some getting used to.
Put 250K+ on that, then sold it to my niece. She put another few thousand on it and sold it to someone else. There's a lot of those still on the road.

I swapped out the sharkee with a Diamond NR73BNMO that I snagged off my truck. It performs quite a bit better than the sharkee

I wonder why cop cars always have those tougher looking rims. I call 'em "cop rims".

Yea its a nice lookin interceptor utility.
Typically hard steel rims instead of aluminum rims with a bunch of spokes to look cool. I thin ford has their cars able to take a curb at 35 or 40 or something, thats what the marketing material said for my CVPI. Sometimes they get bent but no wheres near as quick as an aluminum rim or one lucky pothole would crack the Al rim. But the steel wheels are heavy as hell compared to Al with the un-sprung weight and all. Makes you feel like your driving a tank combined with stiff springs and shocks. Then they only have the lug nut covers for extra air flow over the brakes

What's CVPI?

I've always hated how Chargers have really poor ground clearance. I don't understand why cops get those things. How can you chase the bad guys when the car is so low you're scraping the ground.

"Steelies". Cheap, effective, and durable. I have them on my F-350.

If publically owned vehicles were driving around with what some might consider "fancy" rims, we'd never hear the end of it.

And if you bend one, they are easily fixed. I've taco'd steel wheels on ATV's and beat them back into shape with a hammer. Can't do that with aluminum rims.

Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. Slowest car for police work. Lol
Hey, they were **** hot in 2004 when that them there 250 horses debuted against them small time pre-200 hp econoboxes.

Speed had not much to do with it, it was always the bean counters, first it is fuel costs, then maintenance costs then combined with reliability and longevity that matters. Almost all the PDs in my area dumped the first gen chargers as they were too much of a hassle

I always thought if they gave the option for 3.73's in the vic in the 2000's with maybe combined with a bit more aggressive tune, they were the same engines as the mustang and detuned for reliability of being beat to **** by patrol cops, they could have competed a bit better with the charger, not like they didn't have the vic already sold because they were well liked, but Ford was already tired of the vic by then, really ready to cancel it by 2008 as they did with retail versions. The vic lasted a few years longer than it should have but still came out above everything else because of its legendary reliability
